Hi, I am on a limited speed line and win8.1 has started to download the update. I now find that is it is some 3G in size and that will take days.

How can I stop the download?

I have tried the suggestions here...
How can I stop the download of Windows 8.1? - Microsoft Community
but of course that has done nothing.

Effectively I cannot do any online work until I can stop the download hogging the limited bandwidth.

Arrrghh MS strikes again.

Thanks

Hello CarvedDuck,

You could disconnect your internet connection until you get an error that the download could not complete to stop it. Afterwards, you could reconnect the internet to continue on without the update downloading until you start it over.

Hope this helps, :)

Not sure if this will work under you current situation but you could also try turning off the live Store tile and see if that helps:

Thanks, I tried everything. After waiting about five minutes after rebooting the modem (or turning it off and then on) the transmission would start up again. I even tried turning the modem off overnight so I would get assigned a different IP. The update just sent the new IP and continued.

Fortunately right before I had started the update, I had made a full image backup. I turned off the modem and did the full restore. That took about 45 minutes but I am back to pre-update status and the crap has finally stopped.

Typical msoft inept programmers thinking that no one might need to stop or pause the download. Many years back I was head-hunted by msoft as a programing leader, and the HR people could not understand why I kept rejecting their offers. I would have needed a frontal lobotomy in order to relate to the team. LOL

Gggrrrrr.

If I were in this situation, 1st step would be getting back control over the connection, by finding the ip in use (Resource Monitor > Network) then block it with a firewall rule. Then find out how to delete\kill the ongoing download.
