I was having problems with my HP laptop which is 2 years old. So I just did a recovery and put it back to the original factory. It seems to be working fine. The next thing I want to do is installing Windows 8. I have the CD for 8 which I purchased from Staples when it first came out. Since my computer is 2 years old and I have it back to the factory setting, there would be hundreds of updates if I were to update it as it is now. My question is: Since I have the Windows 8 CD, is it necessary for me to take the time to install the updates for Win 7 which is on there now, or can I just us the CD and install Windows 8 as it is now? When I install 8 I will do the clean install.

Hi Frank. No sense in wasting time to install windows 7 updates. Those updates have nothing to do with the new OS, so go ahead and fresh install.

You're welcome. Good luck with your install. You'll probably have a ton of updates for 8. :(

Not only that, but I'll have a lot of apps that I need to reinstall. I did save all of my important data. I have always thought that if a persons backs up his data and if he wants to go through all the hassle, it might be a good idea to set your computer to the factory settings. And then put all of your stuff back on. I know it's a lot of hassle, but over a period of time a computer can accumulate a lot of junk and this is a way to give it a good house cleaning. Is there any logic to that?

Yes, three rules of computing > Backup > Backup > Backup!

A backup mirror image on a USB thumb drive is actually the best IMO. That's after you have it running stable with all updates, apps/programs, personalization, and all other tweaks of a system you want it to be. If ever one has to recover just install the image. One may have to install some updates and perhaps a few apps/programs, but that isn't much. Also mirroring on the drive every other month or so to keep up to date.

In your case now returning it makes sense. It may grab some drivers that you need from your present system. Drivers are 90% of install problems.

Are you going to update to 8.1? If so, make sure 8 is running stable before you do, otherwise it might just carry over problems.

Yes, I'm in the process of getting all the up dates for 8. When I'm sure everything is OK, I'll put on 8.1
