Lost windows 8.1

I am running licensed version of windows 8 pro on my desktop and have been trying to find the
windows 8.1 upgrade link in the windows 8 store without success. My research
indicates this may be because the required update (KB 2871839) has not been
installed even though I have installed all available updates. (I used the
update search function to confirm that it was not installed) I have also tried
to install that update it manually form
Windows 8.1 update not showing - Super User however
I get an error message saying that update is not applicable to this system.

Could some please help me understand why the link to windows 8.1 is not appearing in my store.
Thank you
Jeff

  1. Do you have any anti virus software installed in your HP desktop ? if so, you might want to uninstall it completely using their special uninstaller software downloaded from their website.
  2. Delete everything under: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download
  3. From the elevated command prompt, run:
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  4. From the elevated command prompt, run:
    sfc /scannow
  5. Run Windows update again.

Good luck !!!

I tried doing what you told me and it disabled windows update. I presently using
windows 8 the image restore to restore my system. However I have three system
running window 8 and have been able to update only one, my laptop to windows
8.1 because
the upgrade link is not appearing in windows store in my other two
systems. I am only getting a windows updating error on one (my desktop) and
not on my other system. If you look at the error file (KB2822241) on
my desktop you will see that it is not the one that is not the one associated
with the windows 8.1 upgrade
(KB 2871839). Additionally the fact that I am cannot find the upgrade link in
the windows store on my other system which does not have any updating issues tells
me there may be problem with the delivery

system. Is there another way of
installing or obtaining the windows 8.1 upgrade files other than through the windows store

I was wondering if the problem we are having with accessing the download file
in the windows store is related to the fact that my desktop and notebook
computers are not tablets which do not have the "RT" format. As I had
mentioned in my first post I tried to manual install the update form the
Microsoft update center atDownload Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2871389) from Official Microsoft Download Center by
selecting the "Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2871389)"
however the file name indicates ("Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu") that that
update is for a tablet computer. This is probably why may we are receiving
the error message that this update is "not applicable" to our desktop computers.
Could some please contact Microsoft and see if they can provide a link to the
KB2871389 update that is compatible with computers which are not tablets.

Thanks

Jeff

As I mentioned in my previous post I went to "Update is available that enables a notification to be displayed that helps you update Windows 8 or Windows RT to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1" and clicked on the linked "All
supported x64-based versions of Windows" which downloaded the file
"Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu." However as the file name indicates
(Windows8-RT) that file is for a tablet not a desktop computer. Granted it
may have been misnamed. However the fact that it is incompatible with both
of my desktop systems suggests that it is not. Would someone please
contact Microsoft and ask them to check that they have the correct update linked
to "All supported x64-based versions of Windows" on there web site at Update is available that enables a notification to be displayed that helps you update Windows 8 or Windows RT to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 or if it is correct provide a work around that
will allow us to install windows 8.1 because other threads in this forum
suggest this is not an isolate problem.

Thank You

Jeff.

@jeffocal

after downloading, when you click on the msu file what happens? it is installing --updating-- or not?

(for your information, I had the same issue a few days back; I had actually disabled all automatic updates; so I downloaded the Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu file, I found clicking on it doesnot install it automatically; I restored the file association and also did a manual run of "wusa Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu /quiet")

For example, if the Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu file is in the c:\test folder, type the following command at a command prompt to install the update package:wusa.exe c:\test\Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu /quiet

after installing you have to reboot

I followed your instructions and a dialog box open which indicated that Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu was being installed without any errors appearing. However after rebooting the windows 8.1 update still does not show in the windows store. I check to see if the the update KB2871389 was installed by searching my installed update and it was not listed.

I am pretty sure that the problem is related to the fact that the update file is for tablet devices and may not be compatible with many desktop or laptop configurations. My reason for thinking this because a number of my friends with non tablet devices are having similar problems.

IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY OF OBTIANING THIS UPDATE and if not why not because the frustration and lack of response to what should be a simple update process is making me reconsider my loyalty to Microsoft.

@jeffocalI am no Microsoft fan or loyalist; though I am a regular user of Microsoft (and sometime Linux);now coming to your issue, when you checked the installed updates, I believe you checked the "installed updates" option on left lower corner in the updates (control panel > system and security > windows update) or control panel > programs >programs and features > installed updates. This will list all the successfully installed updates.if you don't find kb2871389 in this list, then, please check the history; ie control panel >system and security> windows update >view update historythis will list all the updates attempted through the windows update service, here you should be able to see the KB2871389 listed and "failed /succeeded (sic)" (for your info KB2871389 is not listed in my update history, as I used Portable update (http://www.portableupdate.com/public/PortUp.zip ); in case your history also doesnot show the update, use one of the two options:1) reattempt wusa.exe c:\test\Windows8-RT-KB2871389-x64.msu /log:c:\wusalog.log(this will try to install the update and may provide some pop-up as the quiet option is removed; also a log file shall be created to show the status of attempt for the update)2)as I wrote above, I use portable update http://www.portableupdate.com/public/PortUp.zip ; you can also download this and copy the extracted contents to a user folder (I use c:\portup ); on opening the executive it will download certain files in the toolbox folder and after it will show ready option; select the search tab and click on start; it will search for the updates released so far and compare with the updates installed and list the installed and uninstalled updates; you can see the history of attempts to install including stand alone wusa.exenow go to the download tab, select the kb2871389 and click on start; it will downlad the windows-rt-kb2871389-x64.cab file in the cache; and then select the file in the install tab and again click the start; it will install it;thanks for your patienceregardsneelakantan

Thank you

The I cannot find the update kb2871389 in either the installed or listed as failed in the update or history folders and I have no idea why. However
I'm a bit hesitant downloading any additional software to solve this issue because past experience tells me that usually create more problems than it solves.

No because then I will have to reinstall most of my apps. There must be a better solution out there we just have to find it.

One possible solution might be if we could download a copy of the just windows 8.1 upgrade software burn it to a dvd and use that to upgrade.

If any one know were we can get a copy of that ISO we appreciate if you could post the link.

thank you
