Thanks SIW2--Sorry, I don't have an answer for you...I had been using a BounceBack recovery drive and may have tried to clone this system--let me try your suggestions--I actually have 6 external drives..

Let us know how it goes. The fewer potential points of confusion for setup.exe, the better your chances.

If you have bounceback doing that real time back up thing, probably worth turning that off.

Hi guys--well, it got stuck on that boot screen for a few mins--the one that says to press f2 or f12--but finally loaded--
all the commands ran fine, but when I look at the disk management it looks exactly the same--here is a screen shot-sorry, forgot to detach the external drives--

it shouldn't look the same, should it?

    Thanks,

    That is better.

Detach the external drives and disk 2.

Then have a go at installing this thing. With a bit of luck it will work.

Look forward to hearing the result. If you still have a problem , we will try reverting pending, first see if it works with what you have done so far.

Unfortunately, same error--Windows 8.1 could not be installed-- 'we have returned your computer back to the way it was' or some such mssg...
Somehow, I seemed to miss disconnecting two drives--I think one is internal, but perhaps both are...

Here is another 'funny' thing the machine does--upon restarting it keeps trying to boot from a drive not set as the default in the BIOS--so I am constantly being confronted with the select keyboard for your country screen before it prompts me either to fix(whatever)or shut down...I keep changing the BIOS to boot from the correct drive and it keeps getting changed back to I'm not sure what drive...actually I think I normally just press the boot from option and select the drive(it is usually already in place to be selected)..but if I press f2 or f12 it'll boot correctly...

I also neglected to do a clean boot too...

Should I just try it again? this time making sure to disconnect all the drives save the primary whether external or internal? or do you think it's another issue altogether?

    Thanks....

The way to find out is to have only disk 0 attached. Unplug all others.
