    Thanks for posting your fix.

Wonder why that would work, though, since itís the same BIOS version.
    1. I tried clear CMOS
    2. I tried enter maintenace mode

Every time I put old CPU it was ok to boot Windows 8.1 x64.
But latest BIOS is 1 year later after E8400 was issued, so it shoudl support it.
I think this is kind of bug in BIOS that it writes something CPU depended during flash.
reflash with E6750 ,didn't help. Only re-flash with E8400 inserted helped to resolve my issue.

Before re-flash BIOS does not see Intel Virtualization option with E8400 inserted - after re-flash it shows it.

This thread has more information on the problem (thread is related to VT but if you look at a CPUID reference you will notice that the CX16 bit can be affected by the errata too):
Note the bottom posts about a specific BIOS update method being required.

Um, nobody has talked about this since 2014? Here I am trying to decide what OS to upgrade to on my XP machine and I'm really wondering. I want to go to 8.1 since 8 will not be supported (WTF is That all about MS?!). I see 7 is still supported except for free online or phone support. I want 64 bit so I won't do 8.1 X86, my software needs 64 it.
The machine in question is not terribly old, has a Core 2 Duo in it, lots of ram etc. But I know that it's often the MB that is the culprit. Is there a way to tell if my MB will do it? As usual, MS is about as much help as . . . well, none. I've kept running XP on that machine for a specific reason which has now gone away, so it's upgrade time. I understand 10 has the same issue.
So, how soon will they stop supporting 8? Will it get the same support 7 is getting - updates etc for 5 years? I do want 8 but if I must then 7 it will be.
I just checked and the MB is an Asrock P43TWINS1600.

That is fairly easy, just use any CPUID utility. It should show CMPXCHG16B and VT-x for example. If it doesn't you need a BIOS update.

Actually, I went to the Asrock sight to check it out. For my MB they have driver updates for everything up to Win 7. So I concluded that 8.1 would not work and ordered 7 pro. Hope I haven't screwed up, but I used 7 for a long time on my old laptop before it died and liked it pretty much, so . . .

Thank you for the reply. It would be cool to be able to use 8.1 or 10 but having just spent $50 I think it will be awhile before I do. As long as MS supports 7 I guess it'll be okay. (they say until 2020)
