Cannot update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 :(

Machine is an Acer Aspire laptop, i5 processor, 4GBRAM. Shipped with Windows 7, have been running Windows 8 on it for over 6 months now.

Certain updates from Windows Update simply will not install, it says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes". These updates are the ones that will allow me to update to 8.1 via the store.

Upon scouring the internet, I have tried many fixes, including a slui.exe activation, running a DISM cleanup, running sfc / scannow, disabling all non-Microsoft services from msconfig, running the SURT tool..... None of these have helped.

Any ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance!

What specific failure message did you get from the Windows Store? In addition to all you have tried, did you try running the Microsoft Fixit program to try and resolve your update issue. Also, I'm not sure how that slui.exe attempt fits directly into you troubleshooting scenario unless you have authentification issues (which were not mentioned). Good luck.

make sure you have all your current windows updates installed. for some reason you need to have update KB2871389 installed for the windows store to even show the update. try that, and see if it works, if your having windows update issues, you can download it directly and install it using a standalone installer. im currently downloading windows 8.1 25 percent complete. hope this helps!

you can download it directly and install it using a standalone installer.

Can you please share a link to that download? I'm sure many would be very appreciate of that information.

Thanks,

download the file your probably going to need the 64 bit verison. save and run. and let the installer do its thing. after its done restart, then check windows store and you should be able to see the windows 8.1 update. yes, it saves itself as a standalone installer.

no problem let me know how it works out. windows 8 updates are the most annoying and buggy that i have ever encountered. i have a hp 20002b19wm 15.4 inch laptop with 8gb ram and 320gb hard drive, all and all, great budget laptop, but the updates don't go as smoothly as XP, and take MUCH MUCH LONGER.
hopefully microsoft will release service packs in the future that will address all these issues.

I did a clean install of 8.1 using an ISO so I never had to go through all the update steps; however, I'm sure others will chime in if it works (or doesn't work) for them.

Hey thanks for that Now, just to confirm that you somehow ended up with a standalone exe that can be used to do an on-demand manual install?

Update is already listed in the tutorial:

That is the problem. I cannot install those Windows updates. Even with the standalone, which I just tried. It seems to have installed them, but upon rebooting, when it is attempting to configure them, it says "Failed to configure Windows update. Reverting back".

you may just have to reformat and start over. windows 8 can be a real pain. i know how ya feel. try disabling your antivirus and firewall and try again. i know its a long shot, but worth a try.

I don't have the time or inclination to format. But good news! I did a repair install of Windows 8, and now the updates have installed fine! I can finally see 8.1 in the store and it's downloading right now :)

thanks all!
