Windows 8.1 Pro Preview
Evaluation copy build 9431

Several months ago my wife installed the Windows 8.1 preview on her Surface Pro and would now like to install the released version of 8.1 but when she logs into the Windows Store, the upgrade is not shown and she is not prompted to upgrade.

- I have run Windows update and Windows Update does not show any updates need to be installed
- I went to Update is available that prepares Windows 8 and Windows RT-based computers for the update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT and tried to install the updade but got an error
- I will update ths thread tonight when I get home to see if Windows shows that KB2871389 is or is not installed

Theog : Given this is a Surface Pro, reinstalling Windows 8 is not possible since it does not come with windows on any media and I do not believe my wife made a backup of the image onto a bootable USB Drive so the only way I can see to do what yoru suggesting is find a Surface Pro that still has 8.0 on it and back it up to a USB key and then do a restore - Thoughts?

This is how I did it on Wednesday, though without Preview installed beforehand.

  1. Secure your Windows 8.0 Professional Product Key that shipped with your Surface PRO - Make your Choice how.
  2. Burn a suitable Windows 8.1 Professional ISO on a USB Drive using the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool.
  3. Install Windows 8.1 Professional using the appropriate Generic Product Key.
  4. Activate Windows 8.1 Professional using your Windows 8.0 Professional Product Key that shipped with your Surface PRO.

Update your Microsoft Surface from Windows RT 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Preview

Update from Windows 8.1 Preview

You can download the update for free from the Windows Store. You'll be able to keep your personal files, but you'll need to reinstall your apps. Make sure you have any original installation media that might be required for apps that were not installed from the Windows Store.

  1. On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store. Doing this first will allow you to see the progress of the installation once it starts.
  2. After opening the Store, return to this page.
  3. Download Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store.
(You can also enter ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade into the address bar of your browser to reach the download page.)

What happens if you paste ms-windows-store:WindowsUpgrade into your browser address bar and try that?

Note it also says the following on that page, which does suggests there are problems which MS is aware of, but that refers to Surface RTs rather than Surface Pros
Update from Windows RT 8.1 Preview

Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1. As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store. We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience. We will provide updates as they become available.
