Is there any way to stop window 8.1 upgrade?

I mistakenly opted to upgrade from windows 8 pro to 8.1 pro through the store this afternoon. All seemed well at first, it downloaded and installed alright and everything seemed to be fine but after a few minutes testing things out I suddenly lost mouse and keyboard completely. I tried rebooting, safe mode etc but to no avail, still no mouse or keyboard. I decided to cut my losses and re-install win 8 pro from disc, which installed correctly and everything seemed to be back to normal. But I noticed that there is a big download going on without my request or knowledge, I have windows update turned off, so I fear Microsoft is again downloading win 8.1 which I now do not want. In the store there is no sign of the update or any activity. So, can I somehow stop this runaway train or do I have to wait and lose more download capacity? I hope if and when it's finished I will be able to say no to terms and conditions and that will be the end of the story or will it be in a continual loop:eek:

Grateful for any advice

Bodger

You may need to wipe the drive and re-install 8 that way, if there is some download process left over from the Upgrade- I suspect it is downloading the Install Disk for Windows 8.1, and it may be as big as 3 GB.

The system would probably be unresponsive while waiting for the download to finish, on DSL it would take a few hours, on Low BW Cable, maybe half of a Day. Even though you interrupted the install, it is probably still running. Check your Startup Processes, and disable anything that looks like it is related to the UG.

But you might not be able to if the UG runs through BITS. So best bet would be to copy off all of your Data to a backup drive, blank out the drive, and re-install 8.

I think the big downloads are updates for Windows 8 that have accumulated since your installation disc was created. It is my understanding that the 8.1 update is NOT automatic.

Maybe- Shut off Automatic Updates, set it to "never Check" - Then choose your updates manually.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Thanks for your reply. I decided to let it do its thing and finish downloading, and as I say hopefully avoid having another go installing. I checked task manager and the only thing vaguely active during download was windows processes. It has now finished whatever it was but it has not tried to install or ask me to install win 8.1, just stopped and nothing else happened. I've checked my C drive and the windows folder is now 15.3Gb! I've now switched on windows update for 63 files totaling three quarters of a gig, so I don't think that was the problem. Apart from that the re-installed win 8 so far seems to be stable, so I will stick with it, even thou only supported for another two years but as my pc is 7 years old it will probable die before. Just need to find out which files in the windows folder I can delete safely to free up space but I'll probably play safe and not bother.

I never learn, the grass is always greener etc, or, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, should have left well alone and stayed with win 8 and saved a lot of bother, cheers anyway.

Reboot your Computer, and see if some update is being finalized. This magical increase in Folder Size, may mean you have the ISO for 8.1 downloaded, look under Windows/Software Distribution.

If there was SOME update happening, it will be completed as the puter reboots. Try that now. Before you do, open Control Panel and go to Windows Update, check for Updates and see what it says. If it says "A Reboot is needed" then I was correct. Otherwise, just shut off Automatic Updates, set it to Never then do it manually. Else once a week your system will download 100 or so updates a week like Windows 7 used to do.

I selected most but not all updates ie manually, as I always do, and they downloaded and installed correctly. I've checked the windows folder and in software distribution there are several files totaling 750 Mb, though nothing obviously an ISO. I will keep updates off automatic and do selected manual as required. After rebooting I checked the store and win 8.1 update is now available but presume that doesn't mean anything, not until you click download would it interrogate my system and then know I already have the download?

Maybe it stored the 8.1 files to another folder, maybe one on the C drive.

If you have 8.1 partially downloaded, it will probably continue the download. I'm just going to wait until I can find an ISO somewhere, I refuse to update through the Store.
