    Can't update to win 8.1

I am currently on win8. I am trying ti update to 8.1. I went to the store and hit download. The download started and got to 50% then a message said 'installing preparing your pc'. About 15 seconds after that it starts all over downloading. This has repeatedly happened for the last 14 hours. I have restarted and shutdown my pc and when I go back to the store and hit download it says it is downloading. I tried to cancel the download without success. I then went back to download again and it tells me app has been installed. I know this probably doesn't make sense to anyone, but I need help. Any ideas on what I can do to get the update would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Are there any other ways to do the update besides from the store?

    Hello ggoennier,

It's most likely due to the Microsoft servers being overloaded. If the download or installation gets interrupted, it may start over like your experiencing. However, you might see if clearing the Store cache, and trying again during off peak hours may help.

    Hope this helps,

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried it and nothing changed, it is still repeating the download after it reaches 50%. It's like its in a never ending loop, nothing I do will stop it. I will try again later (after 9PM CST) maybe there will be less traffic. Any other suggestions will be most appreciated.

Is there anyway that I can uninstall the store and reinstall it? Maybe that's where the problem is.

More information about my environment. Running on a Dell Inspiron Laptop. Updated from win 7 to win 8 Pro last October without any problems. Specs: 155 GB free space, 3 GB RAM, 6 GB virtual memory, 64-bit configuration. I am unable to cancel the download, cannot even pause it. The download always reaches 50% then says 'installing' then 'getting your pc ready', after about 15 seconds it immediately goes back to downloading from scratch again. This has been going on continuously since 12:00 noon on the 17th. It is now 3 PM on the 19th. Whatever I try to do it will not stop downloading. I do not get any error messages.

Is there anybody that has any idea on how I can stop the download and try to start it again. I followed all the steps to prepare for the update and am trying to do the update from the web store.

    Please help.

Restarting the laptop will interrupt and stop the download.

Thank you for your response. I tried restarting many times and also shutdown several times. Yes, it interrupts but then automatically starts downloading again.

Turn off your WiFi, then restart to see if it will stop it instead.

I did as you suggested, turned off wifi and restarted. Went into the store and it is still downloading from the place where it had interrupted (26%).

If it doesn't have an internet connection, it should not be able to download and stop with an error eventually. You might also clear the Store cache as well.
