How to upgrade to 8.1 a non-metro capable machine?

I successfully upgraded a netbook to 8.1. You have to connect an external monitor and then go to display settings to make the external monitor the only output device. You may also have to increase the screen resolution. You can change the display back as soon as it has finished installing.

    Hi there
    how about this one

Connect your net book to an EXTERNAL monitor -- the graphic cards in these netbooks will support a higher resolution on these than the native screen -- using Windows +P try and display on external monitor only

Then do your upgrade from the store.

    Cheers

    Hello Jimbo,

Please read the post three above yours, " Hello Mad Dog,

Thanks for the reply, no VGA, only a HDMI port, however I had tried attaching an external monitor, still crashes the system with the Intel 3600/Atom 2800 CPU and Metro apps."

C:\Programs Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe is the desktop version. I put a shortcut to it on my Start Screen and unpin the Metro one that I never use.
As soon as I start up C:\Programs Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe it blacks out the screen on my Intel 3600/atom 2800 Toshiba NB525 and the video will not return until I restart.

It will not run correctly weather it is launched from the Metro interface, the desk top, or from file explorer.

Maybe some one knows how to launch it with a command line switch that will be a life saver.

    Hello Inspiron42,

These computers are all similar in size net book however very different in function.

The general term net book needs to be a bit more specific, it is no more descriptive than saying I put an engine in a car, not every V8 will fit in a Smart car.

Let us know what processor and video processor your net book is running?

Again, attaching an external monitor, making the external monitor the only output device and upping the resolution with an Intel 3600/Atom 2800 net book does not permit running of the Metro applications, in addition neither does the registry edit, down scaling or upscaling.

We need some fresh ideas, https://communities.intel.com/thread/33841

Gateway mini with gma3600 graphics and N2600 atom processor.

    1. Disable gma3600 graphics. (screen will flicker as generic driver is activated)
    2. connect external monitor capable of 1024 X 768 minimum resolution
    3. Change graphics to only show monitor #2 (lcd screen has to be black)
    4. disable the generic graphics driver
    5. check graphics again and select 1024X768 resolution or greater
    6. Run the store app to get the update.
    7. After installation is complete remove external monitor and re-enable the gm3600 graphics and you should be good to go.

The key here is to disable the gma3600 which installs the generic driver and then disable the generic driver as well. I don't know why it works but it does.

    Good Luck!

    Hello Inspiron42,

Thanks for you reply, I have 8.1 on the machine it will just not run any of the metro/modern apps or IE11, launch of IE just disables my display to a flickering black screen, other metro/modern app say to low of resolution.

Which video driver are you running with on your machine with 8.1, the Intel 8.14.8.1091 or a Gateway specific driver and what resolution are you using?

I modded my Gateway LT4009u with a 4GB ram stick (It will recognize 3 MB) and a 120GB SSD. I am using the Acer D270 driver version 8.14.8.1075 rather than the Gateway driver version 8.14.8.1065. You can get the 1075 driver from the Acer website. To be honest I don't see any difference. I was never able to get the 1091 driver to install. I am using the standard 1024 x 600 resolution.
