How to download the Windows 8.1 ISO

    Normally in Windows 8 there is no ei.cfg file. It's something that's added to make it a custom install. Same deal with PID.txt and the $OEM$ folder. Windows will look for them and use them if they are there. Windows 7 has the ei.cfg file but 8 doesn't.

    In hindsight that all makes perfect sense, and explains why I couldn't find either the PID.txt or $OEM$ files using search engine.

    Pity you're in Canada. It would be interesting to sit down with you and learn first hand.

    To be honest it still really gets up my nose that I paid $149 for an OEM version of 8 from a retail store, but am not able to use the product key to download the ISO of 8.1. Yet people who bought a key from the MS store for 8 @ about $40 odd get the ISO download. If I had known 8.1 was coming I would have got the $40 deal and downloaded the software from the store. Then got the 8.1 and made an ISO from that. To be honest it makes me hesitate to rush in and buy any new MS product until it's been out for at least a year.

    Windows 8.1 Pro is selling for $175 in the computer shops in Perth, West Aust, and there's no way I'd pay that when I've already spent $149 on 8 Pro OEM ... and that's when the $A was worth more than the $US. It really sucks.

    If I didn't have my TechNet/MSDN sub I'd be in the same boat. I'd be scouring the Internet trying to find an unaltered ISO. Our laptops came with factory OEM Windows 8.0 installs and my two desktops were running Windows 7. They'd likely still be running 7 if I hadn't gotten my Microsoft MVP status.

    I was wondering if I saved the files from my friends Win Pro 8.1 disc, from the optical drive, and put my OEM key in a PID.txt, and then converted it to a bootable ISO, would that work so it acted like a normal DVD?

    If so, I'd be very grateful if you could tell me, step by step:

    1. How to write the text in the PID.txt file for my product key?

    2. Where to copy it to in the files off the 8.1 disc?

    Use the PID.txt in sources folder to automate product key entry.

    Windows 8.1 (core) generic product key
    PID.txt
    Code:
    [PID]
    Value=334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
    Windows 8.1 Pro generic product key
    PID.txt
    Code:
    [PID]
    Value=XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB

    #genet: Thanks very much.

    Using my friends Win 8.1 Pro disk, with data saved from optical drive to desktop, would both those two entries be in one PID.txt file? So it would look like this:
    [PID]
    Value=334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
    [PID]
    Value=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx
    Where the 2nd code is my OEM sticker code?

    OR

    Would I only need my Win 8 Pro disk key? So it looks like this:
    [PID]
    Value=xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxx
    OR

    Simply a single generic Win Pro 8.1 key.

    edit: How to download and clean install Windows 8.1 -> link

    You can't install Windows 8.1 with the Windows 8 product key. You have to enter the Windows 8.1 generic/retail/OEM product key to install Windows 8.1.

    PID.txt - if you install Windows 8.1:

    - only Windows 8.1 (core) generic product key

    OR

    - only Windows 8.1 Pro generic product key

    OR

    - only Windows 8.1 (core) genuine retail/OEM product key

    OR

    - only Windows 8.1 Pro genuine retail/OEM product key

    As far as I know its one entry only like Genet posted. And as he mentioned for 8.1 it has to be an 8.1 product code as what's in this file is used to do the install. Mine are my TechNet 8.1 codes. It goes in the sources folder.

    Thanks guys Will let you know how it goes after I've done the ISO and installed it.

    Cheers Mustang

    UPDATE: I used Magic Jelly bean to extract the key from the installed version of W8.1 Pro, but it didn't work. So that leaves me fresh out of options. However, it's been a good learning curve for any future reloads for others.

    The disc I was given must have been edited in some way because it loads Win8.1 Pro without putting in any key, but will only activate with my Win8 Pro OEM key. Bottom line is it works, so I'll let it go at that. Also checked the files saved to desktop from this disk ... using Avast, SuperAnitspyware and Malwarebytes ... and all good.

    Many thanks for all your help and patience with a nooby to PID.txt files.
