Is it actually a Retail version? You can buy OEM versions from Retail stores.

I don't have an email from the MS store, because as stated above, I bought it from a retail store.

I can't understand why I can't get anything to download from that key??? I mean if the disc was accidentally damaged or lost, surely I should be able to download the software for Win8 Pro OEM????
Why don't I upload the iso to my Dropbox and you can download it from there!
(Wait a sec, will that even work?)

It's the original Windows 8 Pro 64bit OEM that came out in October 2012. I bought it from PLE computers and used it under the hobbyist EULA ... ie I installed it onto my PC as the first install ... and the licence allows me to put it onto any computer I own as long as it is only on one PC.

If I format my hard drive it will still install from the original disc using the original serial key. But the only way I have been able to upgrade to 8.1 is via the free store upgrade. I did reinstall it and try to get the 8.1 ISO from the W8 user interface ... but same message ... this key will not work.

I think it would be too big to get from DropBox, but thanks for the thought.

Ah well there you go, it's an OEM version, that's why your product key doesn't work for the 8/8.1 download. That download will only accept Retail version keys.

At the time I purchased Win8 there was no retail version ... only OEM which was unique in that it offered the hobbyist EULA. When you upgrade to 8.1 that EULA no longer applies and it is seen as a standard OEM.

But like so many have said, MS forces you to upgrade to W8.1 as W8 will shortly not be supported, but it can only be done through the store. And the download is over 3GB. So there is no such thing as a clean install from a disc, even if it is on the same machine.

And there's no way i'm handing over another $179, the going price of W8.1, just so I can get a clean install. If anything I'll just wait and see what W9 brings.

When I upgraded from the store, I had to do it 3 times before everything worked. In essence I formatted the HD, installed a bare bones copy of W8, then upgraded the minimum version of 8.1, meaning no updates or 3rd party apps or programs. Then created an Acronis backup image. And that's as close as I can get to a clean install.

Frankly, I've had so many bugs with W8/8.1 that Apple is looking more and more attractive. So if W9 doesn't cut the mustard, it's bye bye MS for me.

#theog: I used retail loosely in the sense that the disc was purchased from a retail store as opposed to a licence key from the Windows store.

As said in the previous post, there was no such thing as a true retail key when W8 Pro came out.

Tell me, if you have a true retail key for W8, how did you acquire it, as there was no retail version? How would anyone have such a key?

When Windows 8 first came out in the UK the Upgrade retail version was 14.99.

    This is UK.

I never heard of a retail version of any description being available in Australia. In the past I have always bought WinX Ultimate retail versions, and would have if it had been available for W8.

Where did you buy the Upgrade retail version? Was it a download from the MS store? And were you upgrading W7? If that was still available, and I knew I could get the ISO by using it, then it might be worth spending the much smaller amount of money.

Is there a thread in this forum which gives a link to get the upgrade?

I clicked the link you gave and it showed it being available as an upgrade for 99.99 pounds, (sorry no pound symbol on my keyboard), for people wanting to upgrade from Win7.

They list the only upgrade for current W8 users to W8.1 to be through the MS store download.
