Their are two ways to get Windows 8 OEM.
    1) Pre-installed on a PC which is locked to that PC and the key is in the Bios.
    2) Buy the disc from a vendor which then has the "Personal Use License" and can be used just just like a retail version. Applies to Windows 8 only and not to 8.1

Aside from that, I recently looked at the thing Sony supply. Unbelievable amount of resource hogging crapware on that.

The per unit margins are so thin, oems have to make money from including this junk. If they weren't stung by the license fee, they wouldn't need to.
It was a 16GB thumb drive for my ASUS for the factory image. The other thing that pisses me off about that is, if you log in the first time with your live ID, all those junk apps end up in your store profile with no way to delete them. My "Your Apps" section is littered with those factory installed Apps that I never used or wanted.

I installed the sony recovery thing on my custom desktop. wasn't hard to get it to install ( not a sony machine, of course).

I managed to get rid of a lot of the crap with Your Uninstaller ( It is not free, but they gave me license a while back. It is good).
Your Uninstaller! 7 - Uninstall any unwanted software/program completely. Download for free.

Geek has a free version which I expect would do decent job. Took a while and reboots to get of rid mcAfee, some gigantic thing that seems to want to sell you games, and other unwanted baggage.

I'm past that now, I do clean installs when necessary. The Recovery Thumb drive wouldn't work once I swapped out the factory drive for a smaller SSD. I've since erased it and reused it for other things. I have access to TechNet so I have the nice clean official Microsoft ISO's to use.

You were lucky if you only got a few things included. It seems to vary a great deal.

Maybe one or two of the oems have realised if they include a handful of bloat, rather than dozens, they are more likely to sell.

Personally, I wouldn't even want any of those things you listed.

The oems are finding it tough. They need the money. I believe they get as much as 75% of the a/v purchase and renewals.

On average, they make less than $14 on each laptop. Higher priced machines will have a larger absolute margin, but not necessarily a higher percentage. Lenovo is able to leverage economies in their home base and may be getting $15 on avergae. Huge advantage for them over the others.

I think I know why ,they just cant be bothered !!

I been around computer for years ,I took a real interest in my first 386/win3.11,learning on my own how to use it ,take it apart repair it ,ect ect ,the rest of my family and my wife's family bought them too, used them ,but never took the interest like I did ,that was back in 1996,
I still have to create there recovery media for most if not all of them [ some of them are school teachers ,lawyers ,legal aids ,electrician and business owners .ect ect ] not stupid people by no means .
I remove all viruses and reinstall windows when needed and help them copy pics off cameras ,basically they just know how to surf the net ,for the most part I think most are just to lazy to learn how to do it all ,you have to admit it take a lot of time to master most of it

I am running Windows 8.1, but wish to follow a "MakeUseOf" turorial on making a custom Windows 8.1 installation DVD. I get the download starting, but it stops before completion. All I want is the W8 iso.
Edit: Hmmm that's not what I wanted; it's installing. I thought I'd get the chance to choose the install method i.e. iso.
