Ok, I ran both ProduKey and BelArc, and both of them found only the original key, not the altered one. So ya mighta been right, Alphanumeric. Odd, because that little widget never failed me before... very strange. But I trust BelArc pretty well, and it says my 8.1 is activated with the original key I purchased from MS. So that is the one I will use, if I have to do a clean install.

I would have expected a new key to be a lot different from the original 8 key. Being so close with only a few characters shuffled around didn't make sense to me. I've lost track, so were you able to download the ISO with your original key?

No, the downloader was not working with either that original key or the altered one. The only way I could get the downloader to accept anything and move forward was to use the generic one which won't activate... and then plan on changing it later, to complete activation.

OK, I could have sworn that somebody said the generic keys wouldn't let you download either. That's why I asked. I do believe upgrade keys wouldn't work for the download either. In any case just make sure the version you downloaded matches your key. What you download will be Core or Pro depending on what key you enter during the download. If you try to install Core with a Pro key or Pro with a Core key it won't work.

Absolutely, Windows has always been that way. I learned that early on, when I tried to do a clean install of XP on another machine using my own disk, only to discover afterward that the original version (and matching COA) was Home Edition, not Professional. (Their original installation disk was nowhere to be found, of course.)

My Windows 8 and 8.1 TechNet ISO's are actually multi edition. They will install Core or Pro depending on what code you enter during the install. That's the first time I've seen that. I do believe the Retail Windows 8 DVD's are the same way too. It all has to do with the Add Features option. You can go from Core to Pro without needing to insert your install media, all the files are already on your system. Same deal with then adding Media Center, the files are already there on the hard drive waiting to be enabled.

I've seen those "All-In-One" installers out there. I assume that whatever version your key happens to be, they must let you make a choice of 32- or 64-bit to install? Because my Pro key has worked equally well for either.

I steer clear of the all-in-one ISO's seen on bit torrent etc. It's modified media and who knows what's been done to it. Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 Product Codes are all good for 32 bit or 64 bit, its your choice which one you use.

I've read through so many pages trying to figure out my problem I decided to just ask.. I have a windows 8 pro OEM DVD with key which I used to install on my computer at launch.. I upgraded to 8.1 through the store for free.. now i'm trying to reinstall windows but everything I've tried I get an error. starting from the dvd and trying to reset or refresh gives me a files missing error. don't see any way to reformat and install windows 8.. other than reset that won't work. only thing I can think of is to switch hard drives and install 8 on an empty one and then erase my current main drive and then switch back and try installing but that seems like a long way to go just to reinstall the windows I bought.. and i'm not even sure it will work.. are these problems because it's oem? it doesn't actually say oem on the dvd and it's not a typical HP or dell dvd.. bought it from tigerdirect.
