So now I have two different product keys for each installation. But when I go to download the 8.1 ISO file (just in case I need to do a clean install, in the future), NONE of the keys will work to get it downloading. Anybody else experience this one? Win 8.1 is activated in both cases, the keys just won't work for the download.
Your not by chance looking at the product ID shown on the system screen? The Product ID shown on that screen is not the Product code used for the install. If that is not the case, what are you using to view the product code? Your original Windows 8 keys should work as long as they are not OEM keys, OEM keys are rejected for this download.
I had an original retail key that would not work with this trick.

I used a keyfinder to extract the actual product key from the upgraded install. The old key started out TCJTD-937WK-DNFXF-, and the new key begins as RTCJT-D937W-KDFXF- one character added on the front end, and the extra character dropped in the third grouping. The last two groupings are the same.

My original key was purchased from MS online, as the Win 8 Upgrade they were doing last year, if you were running any other Windows version. I had XP at the time, in 32-bit, but I later converted my Win 8 to 64-bit by using my key to download the 64-bit installation media from another machine... which worked just fine, it had no problem with my key then. But the same method will not work now. I might have to get a parrot and an eyepatch.

Thanks, that "Generic" key at the end works to get the download rolling.

From what I read in that other conversation, it sounds like the key to use during a clean install would be the original key I purchased, not the altered one from the upgrade. Is that correct?

The screenshot itself (#3) says to use the 8.1 key (the altered one, from the upgrade) for a clean install. But the text right below it seems to contradict this. That's why I asked.

    1) Use a Windows 8.1 product Key

    screenshots 1, 2 , & 3.

    2) Activate with your Windows 8 product Key.

    3) Open PC Setting.

    4) Click on Change product Key.

    5) Type in your Windows 8 product Key & Activate.

To install you need a Windows 8.1 key. There are leaked install keys that will let you install but won't activate. Once installed you can activate with your Windows 8 key. I wasn't aware that the upgrade though the store actually changed the product code. Me thinks you key finder screwed up and is giving you an incorrect read out. I don't think that altered key is a valid Windows 8.1 key. As far as the download goes, your issue may be related to your key being an upgrade key and not a full retail key. I used full Windows 8 Retail keys and had no problems, YMMV though.

That keyfinder has been reliable for me in other cases. But I can try running BelArc Advisor, and see if it gives me anything different. In any event, I'm activated on both machines, the major problem was getting my hands on the media ISO for "just-in-case"... which I can do now. Thanks, folks!
