    hmm! I am also in the same predicament even though I have a license for retail 8.1 pro; and (after long discussions with Microsoft /Bangalore, where they claim it cannot be the case), I am forced to download GA iso from Philips ( I am not giving the link here!);

    however, since I have done the update using store app, I am planning to make an image; though I have some partition software for that, I am interested in trying out DISM /image-capture option to create a wim file.

    I am interested in your statement "both the program built into windows" ; do you mean the recovery option? or am I missing something very basic?

    Go to "file History" then look to the right lower corner, there you will see the "built in image program" system Image backup, its pretty much the sama as the old W7 recovery program, it will Image your drive (drive with OS installed) as set up.

    The partitions are now to small with the new WinRE.wim.
    I never had anything like this, the only partitions I still have is the old HP W7 recovery D (20g) and some tools thing E (3g) even the 199mg system partition was there when I had W7 installed before I upgraded to W8. So nothing was added or changed when I did the W8 or the W8.1 updates.

    I assume I could just remove the D and E drives but since they aren't in the way I don't bother, I have plenty space on my C and my USB external drive.

    This ain't nuttin different than the ISO's people been burning, they just makin a buck on people that only want the disk already burned for them. You can install 8.1 with a "install key" but need your retail key to actually activate the thing.

    As you upgrade from Windows 7 with WinRE3 on C:/, Windows 8 upgraded to WinRE4.

    My Win 8 is a clean install where the OS is on its own SSD, and user data is on a separate HD. A pretty common scenario, in fact the most useful information I got on this topic was from EightForum users! I discovered that following the traditional upgrade proceedures (installing Windows8, upgrading security fixes and whatnot making the 8.1 upgrade available at the Store, then upgrading to 8.1) returns the very friendly "It looks like your User Data is on a separate partition than your Windows installation... therefore making the upgrade impossible ("Not Supported" by Microsoft. wtf MS??). Anyway, my question is, has anyone tried the method currently being dicussed on this forum (obtain 8.1 iso, use generic key to initiate install, then use your valid 8 key to validate 8.1) with your User data on a separate partition/or drive? Any success cases?
    I also have my Data on a different drive and I had no problems with the update. You must have moved the "My" folders (such as My Music) from the C drive to another drive. Maybe if you added some empty "My" folders back on the C drive , it may work. Just my guess. Good luck.

    ????????? I have no idea what the hell the WinRE3/4/5/6/ ect is, I never had a Windows recovery other than the one HP stuck on this system with the OEM W7, that 20g D drive, and its STILL the same W7 recovery on there, not any W8 or W8.1, I have to make my own recovery images on my USB drive if I want a "recovery".

    Only thing is now that I have a "retail" w8 key I CAN install the OS anytime doing a clean install and not be bothered with any W7 OEM key thing. Same with the ISO (install burned disk) of 8.1.

    Hmm ok well I have that folder as well, however I can't get into it, it says access denied, I tried to re set the security properties, and even the "take ownership/restore rights" but it won't take. So I don't know what's in there, or what its even used for.

    If you have the folder, the WinRE.wim is in side.
