I keep getting the "can't connect, try connection and try again" error.
That's the same I used and it went OK. There's NO difference between a 14.99 / 39.99 or 199.99 key lol.

Could be just a server over load, or could be that MS is waking up to the glitch. Keep trying and see, if it doesn't work after several attempts, the door could have been shut.

But by than there will be a hell of a lot of ISO's out there and I'm sure you'd be able to find one

My only reason to get the ISO was just to have it physically in hand, and for those "just in case" moments. I used the "update" method on my W8 Pro and that went well, once the OS was up and running as usual, I just make a full Image backup using both the program built into Windows, and Acronis 2010 on to a USB external drive, which is what I always use in case of a recovery, since I have a lot of programs I don't have any install disks for and don't want to re do all the settings and changes I made to get it set the way I want it.

? not sure just what this is about, but I have already made 3 Image Backups using the built in program, in File History on W8.1

I haven't tried or need to do a recovery, so I'm not 100% sure of that, but I got no errors doing the image's.

As far as this 8.1.1 maybe the guy added an extra .1 lol, I haven't sen anything in Windows update.

Backup needs to add a file to the 300mb Recovery Partition (UEFI mode) 350mb (Legacy mode).

The partitions are now to small with the new WinRE.wim.

I have a question which hopefully some of you may have experience with regarding the 8.1 upgrade.
My Win 8 is a clean install where the OS is on its own SSD, and user data is on a separate HD. A pretty common scenario, in fact the most useful information I got on this topic was from EightForum users! I discovered that following the traditional upgrade proceedures (installing Windows8, upgrading security fixes and whatnot making the 8.1 upgrade available at the Store, then upgrading to 8.1) returns the very friendly "It looks like your User Data is on a separate partition than your Windows installation... therefore making the upgrade impossible ("Not Supported" by Microsoft. wtf MS??). Anyway, my question is, has anyone tried the method currently being dicussed on this forum (obtain 8.1 iso, use generic key to initiate install, then use your valid 8 key to validate 8.1) with your User data on a separate partition/or drive? Any success cases?
