    What is this "generic key"? How do you get it? Anyone heard if MS will have a 8.1 upgrade disk available if you ever have a crash and need to reinstall the OS?

    Breaking news, another method:
    1 . install 7zip and open 7-Zip File Manager
    2. Extract WindowsSetupBox.exe
    3. Extract Windows8-Setup.exe
    4. copy
    WebSetup.exe
    WebPrep.exe
    compatctrl.dll
    from "WindowsSetupBox"
    into "Windows8-Setup"
    5. edit in "Windows8-Setup"

    cversion.ini

    to be
    [HostBuild]
    MinClient=9458.0
    MinServer=9458.0

    6. open cmd.exe as administrator

    cd Windows8-Setup

    WebSetup.exe /late elevate silent

    Haven't tried it yet, but I expect you need to enter the generic key to install from the iso.

    After it has installed, then you can activate with win 8.0 key.

    [ generic keys are at the bottom of Tonschuh's post:#1 ]

    The official Microsoft 8.1 ISO's on TechNet and MSDN, the same ones leaked as RTM, won't install with a Windows 8 Product Code. They reject it. To get around it you can enter a generic 8.1 install code during install. These codes won't activate. Once its installed you can enter and activate with a Windows 8.0 code.

    Thanks...how do I go about using TechNet or MSDN? Looks like you need some kind of account.

    I know it's not your problem, but it looks like MS is making it hard for the average person to keep his system maintained. If a system crashes, I don't see how a person can reinstall the OS without a whole lot of technical knowledge.

    If you have a OEM manufacturer's PC, you can use the OEM manufacturer's Recovery disk.

    Yes you need a paid subscription for TechNet or MSDN to be able to download an ISO. TechNet was discontinued and is not accepting any new accounts. MSDN is too expensive for most people other than business customers. Microsoft doesn't offer up ISO's to the average Joe. It seems like they go out of their way to prevent you from getting one, I have no idea why?

    As Theog pointed out, you could restore 8 with your recovery media, assuming you made the disks. Then update though the store again to 8.1.

    If you have a purchased copy of Win 8, I can upgrade to 8.1 today, but down the road when you have a crash, you can reload 8 but how to you get back to 8.1 without a disk etc? I have upgraded my test machine with 8.1 and now I need to know how I can reinstall the OS after a crash? I don't want to go to 8.1 with my "good" machine if I don't have a good way to reinstall after a crash.

    Sorry for my being so dense!!!!!!!
