See here's the thing about that, your not actually downloading an ISO. You're downloading the required files to do the update and then telling the utility to create an ISO out of them. Your hash code is likely going to different from mine. I think that is what SIW2 is alluding too with his install.esd hash check.

It seems they are different. There is a suspicion MS is fingerprinting them in some way so they know the original downloader. I have no idea if that is true, but if they can put backdoors to the NSA in the os, they can certainly fingerprint the iso files in a way we would not be able to find.

I've seen various sizes quoted for the download. Mine was 3.63 GB but others have had considerably smaller downloads, it seems.
Maybe the size of the download varies for certain hardware/software already installed?

I upgraded through the store, then booted into the Windows 8.1 setup i had created on a USB and chose repair my PC. Here i chose Reset and it went off an did its thing.

End result was a clean install (of sorts).

I assume you have a retail key and had the install after upgrade activated?
You might be right, I don't have a retail key, I have an upgrade key, the cheaper version initially sold for 25, anyway, good luck to all those who managed a clean install and thanks for posting, I wasn't too keen on 8.1 earlier but when I tried the 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation version and saw your post, thought of giving it a try, 8.1 Ent. version seems OK.

My key was the upgrade offer last year (279SEK) i think, bout 25. SO sounds like i used (successfully) the same type of key as you.
    Hi mosharino,
Nothing wrong with your original post but only a minor detail missing,"Reset" should be done with the generic key and activation with the win 8 key, if you include that information, it would be easier for others, thanks again for your contribution.

If that is true using it on more than one PC, or on a PC other than the one it was downloaded on could be problematic. I haven used mine yet and now I'm wondering if I should even bother. I have the TechNet RTM ISO. Somethings going on that's for sure.

You don't happen to know how to tell if an ISO is Core, Pro, or Multi without actually installing them? I downloaded one with an 8 Pro key and one with an 8 core key. The two ISO's are almost the same size.

    Hibrummyfan,

    Your welcome!

Not sure i follow your post though!

WHen i used the downloaded ISO to create my bootable USB and then used repair to 'reset' i was not prompted for my key. Perhaps i'm missing the point of your post?

So you know, i have actually successfully clean installed using the ISO. I used as mentioned in this thread a 'generic' key and then activated it after install with my legit Windows 8 key.

May be I'm confused as well like the poster above you (nishadrox) due to several installing and uninstalling , at least many of us managed to get what we want, that's all that matters
