Enable hidden items in Windows Explorer (in the View tab) then go to

    C:/Users/your username/AppData/Local/Microsoft/WebSetup

then delete all folders in there. Reboot and start the process again.

    Mine's downloading 8.1 iso as I type.
LOL Now i'm getting can't Connect at the moment

    Probably overloaded LOL

    Thnx for the Tip
I think that's how my problems started.
If it happens again you can just delete those folders again and start over.
    Mine's at 29% downloaded now

Win 8 Pro (WMC) originally; updated to 8.1 prowmc through store

Valid Retail 8.1 "we can't connect now"

    hi
    I have a working ACER laptop (my daughter's) with Win 7 pre-installed; I recently bought (online) win 8.1 pro to be installed when released on 19th October;

    I also have a Lenovo which came with Win 7 and later "upgraded" (and phone activated!) to windows 8 Pro with WMC; inspite of loading the KB 2871389 I am still not able to see the 8.1 free update in the store;

so I thought I will download retail 8.1 pro; when I use winsetupbox.exe, through internet, it asks for the key; and when I enter the key I bought through online store, I get a confirmation saying the key is ok; now when click next I it says "wait...." then then it says "We can't connect at the moment"

I tried clearing the websetup folder and alos rebooting; but of no avail; any suggestions; is it problem at my end or is it problem at server's end; I called Microsoft and they said initially the server is located in east-asia and to try after some time; and when I tried them again, another person said, it is actually from a cloud and needs a higher speed than the speed of LAN connection! and no suggestion how to get the iso!

    any solutions?

    regards

After wasting at least a day and a half on this, I can say that Mosharino (#1 in this thread) was totally correct. The direct download to install method without dvd required for an 8.0 to 8.1 pro update will fail repeatedly (for me, at 72%, at least five times). You need to get Mosharino's download at the MS website following his instructions.

Then, after using the generic key (available on this site to everyone) you can start the install of the burned dvd. This will not activate 8.1, you need your purchased 8.0 key to activate.

However, don't start the install at all if you have not updated 8.0 (as much as possible, since that also will fail) with the standard 8.0 updates.

And, for me, most importantly, you need to update your graphics drivers (I have nvidea). Without doing that update from the site of the manufacturer, you will give a BLACK SCREEN on the install and it will fail for sure.

Also, be aware that the 8.1 update process is very slow (frequent black screens running as long as 20 minutes). There are numerous reboots etc. You have to run to your computer to do a click now and then.

For me then, forget the direct install, get the iso using Mosharino's method, update 8.0, and update the graphics drivers. Otherwise it will fail. That worked. Was it worth the trouble, I don't know? Seems faster, a few more features.

I am hearing we all different iso hashes. I suspect the install.esd is the reason.

Can you all please post the hashes for your install.esd file, then we can see.

Here are the ones I have right now:

    8.1 x64 Pro En-US

    File: install.esd
    CRC-32: ae2b9d58
    MD4: 68d9f2723bf3155cf756c5fb0476d68c
    MD5: 8f45bbf507bde044873daef8dca1b81e
    SHA-1: 1b23cb436c6c1b7fbdebbda5bbea6a6aa3ad9685

    8.1 X64 PRO EN-GB

    File: install.esd
    CRC-32: de4a16d2
    MD4: 3c3dc6e63603dd545b33c5ab88d12685
    MD5: 7449e8dbdfa339e269dcc825dc64476d
    SHA-1: 759bed8391a5ace12fd5bf66087aec07c6e88d29

If you don't have a hashchecker, this is probably the easiest Download Installer (85 KiB)

The VL stands for Volume license that's not the one you want. The Retail one is Windows 8.1 (multiple editions) (x64) - DVD (English) 9/9/2013 > en_windows_8_1_x64_dvd_2707217.iso.

That one is RTM. The new ( GA ) version is different.

I have a feeling they don't want to post GA retail iso files on Technet.

Yes that is RTM. New Enterprise and VL editions were released to TechNet because you can't update those versions though the store. The only way you can do it is with install media. That's my guess anyway. I'm still hoping the Retail ones show up at some point.
