Free 8.1 Pro upgrade

I have a question about the free 8.1 Pro upgrade, if I upgrade, then my computer crashes a few months from now and I have to reinstall window 8 again. Will I then have to buy the upgrade? Just asking. Thanks

No, but you would need to re-install Win 8 Pro, then do the upgrade from 8 to 8.1 again. That's why you should make system image backups so you can restore the machine back to the state it was in when you did the backup.

    Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
Thank You, Yes, I know the importance of making a backup, and have the capabilities to do so, but there are tons of folks that will most likely will not do so, and I didn't know if the free 8.1 upgrade would always be available at a later time.

Instead of an upgrade, think of it as a service pack.

Except service packs could be downloaded and slipstreamed into the os. for future installs. This is basically a new os requiring new product keys

My list of what I don't know about computers is much longer than my list of what I do know, however I build my own computers and I live in a very small town, and there are several folks here that have computers that rely of me to fix their computers when something goes wrong, this is why I asked the question.
