I have error 0xc1900101-0x40017 trying to upgrade to 8.1 Pro X64 via Windows store. Unable to find a solution.

Tried uninstalling AMD graphics driver (in case of a conflict), disabled Norton anti virus & firewall & disconnected external drives. Same result.

Luckily MIcrosoft restores your original version (complete as pre upgrade), but I'm a lose what to try. Any ideas??

Best Regards

I don't have an answer, but I'm having the exact same issue; we're on our second attempt now and both times it's failed at around 83%, followed by the error DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE on a blue screen, followed by the windows logo and a loading symbol. The first time a hard reboot got us back into windows; it restored to windows 8.0, and the error message 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 was displayed. This time we've tried powering down and restarting, but we're still stuck at the windows logo. Hoping it's not trashed our install.

The irritating thing is that we didn't initiate this second attempt; because the files were already downloaded, windows just decided of its own accord to try again. We were given the "your computer needs to restart" message, with no way to cancel it. Any thoughts or suggestions very gratefully received...

Me too and it seems we're not alone. It may be connected to either Nvidia driver or dual graphics, it seems.

ALL,

Try updating to the latest AMD or NVIDIA WHQL compliant driver that is currently available. However, if you have already done so then please ignore my recommendation. Good luck.

Looks like the latest non-beta driver is 327.23 which is on its way to me :)

Oh dear, I won't be trying that again!
One failed Nvidia driver install, one hour to try and get into safe mode and a system restore via the Windows 8 installation USB.
I'll pass on Nvidia drivers and Windows 8.1 for the moment.

I'd pass on the Windows 8.1 Update for the moment but I wouldn't pass on trying to find out why you couldn't update your drivers successfully. At some point (in the future) you are going to have to address that driver update issue because it could be one of the issues that is intertwined with your inability to sucessfully update to 8.1; however, I am very sorry that it did not go smoothly for you. My apologies for suggesting something that ended up in much grief for you but I hope it also gave you an understanding there are other issues that may need to be addressed. Good luck with fixing your driver when you are ready to do so.

I have the same issue.. I've posted onto the Microsoft Technet forum where someone else has already asked why his is failing. Hopefully will get a good response on there.

Agree that it could be something to do with dual graphics and/or nVidia, but I have tried a few different combinations of things and keep having to download the 3GB file each time something changes! I'm running out of ideas and download allowance!

Not at all my2cents. I went into this with my eyes wide open :)
Anything Microsoft based can go hideously wrong in my experience.
No fault or blame attached whatsoever.

What annoys me more than anything (if this is a driver problem) is that Windows checked compatibility first then carried on with the upgrade. Surely such a process should flag any potential problems first, not just carry on blindly.
Admittedly mine is an EFI install on a MacBook Pro so therein may be the problem, however, the Windows upgrade knows that already as the logs prove!

mjpfx, thanks for the link. I'll be watching :)

Macbook Pro? Any reason why you didn't bother to make that clear in your original request for assistance? FYI, its tiny little details omitted (like that) that can make all the difference in the world when attempting to help someone resolve a specific issue. Now, if I would have seen that word in your original post, I would not have even responded because I have absolutely no exposure in that area.

Anyway, good luck.

I'm not the OP on this thread - though I am getting the same error code.
I'm not sure of the relevance of it being a Mac. They still update drivers like other pc's :)
The Upgrade knows it's a Mac - it states which model it is in the logs so it's fully aware before the process begins. If that's a problem to it surely the process shouldn't start never mind continue and fail.

I suspect it's the dual graphics that is a problem (something the upgrade already knew too).

For further information the upgrade has also created a new partition on my hard drive. It's a 350MB partition of type 2700 (which translates to a Windows R E type).
So I don't have Windows 8.1 installed but I do have a Windows 8.1 Recovery Environment?
That seems bizarre!

My apologies; however that's what happens when everyone chimes in on someone else's issue so next time create your own post. How is it possibe to differentiate when all three OPs are trying to respond at the same time to the same issue all in one thread? What happens if all three go in different directions with their responses? Also thanks for telling me there is no difference between a Mac installation and a typical Windows installation. You have taught me many things with your last response. Good luck.

I chimed in because I have the same error code, along with many others, it seems.

Yes but you missed my point. Three OPs in the same thread can take different resolution paths and report back with three different "what next" requests. Now, when you compound that condition with three forum members trying to help "who knows which of the OPs", can you not see the potential confusion created by that condition (eg, who on first; third base)? Anyway, it is always best to create your own thread and it would be reasonable to point out that others are having the same issue, but that way, all responses are "focused" ONLY on your issue and your responses. Good luck.
