Besically "Yes" or "No" to W8 code on W8.1 evaluation copy

I installed Windows 8.1 Beta and all my programs again. It runs fine most of the time; but a few quirks here and there which can be (or were) mostly ironed out...

I have bought an Amazon copy of Windows 8 Pro and want to use the code in the box to legitimise? the current version of windows 8.1 in a few weeks when 8.1 Pro is officially released (plus with any update it may require).

1) Will putting in a Windows 8 Pro code work (for it to auto-update to the latest version of Windows 8.1 via the Windows Update service); even though this is the Evaluation copy of Windows 8.1?
2) Will there be no problems? (Obviously there will).
:sarc:
3) Should I do it? OR wait and pay twice as much for a copy of Windows 8.1 with updates already on the disc and then have to spend another fifty to seventy hours getting my computer and programs (and files) back to normal with another full re-install (remembering every passcode and password and file in the process)?

N.B.;
I only ever buy software with DVD discs. Always with a hard copy back-up for when pre-WW3 starts and the plug is pulled from the internet.

4) Or; will Windows 8.1 run out in a couple of weeks and force me to buy a copy on the internet only?

I say this (at `4)`) because I tried to pay for Windows 8.1 online from my System Properties window (Update online) and it told me generally, that, because I am abroad, (Japan) that I cannot buy windows 8.1 (At least not yet), not using the English language Microsoft Update Purchasing service (words to that effect).

5) Will that always be the case (because I can use the Windows 8 Pro DVD set I bought already for another PC I am re-building)?

I dont want to use the Windows 8 Pro code on the PC in question, if doing so will be a pain in the donkey. I would rather save it to use on another PC I am updating fully as I prefer the main PC to have an copy of W8.1 from disc (less downloads required to update) if there will be any `issues`; as there always seems to be with Windows.

I worry that if I try and use the code on the main PC, and it refuses to play, then I will have gigabytes of W8 updates/downloads if/when I have to reformat the hard drive and reinstall everything again (as millions of people have had to do with various versions of Windows over the past twenty years).. For this PC I would rather install a New purchase of W8.1 if there will be problems with putting a W8 Pro code on W8.1 evaluation.

You can't go from the 8.1 Preview to the RTM (final) though the Windows store. Not as far as I know anyway. If you could everybody would be doing it to get 8.1 for free so Microsoft will block that. You also can't change the Preview to the final just by entering a product code, you have to reinstall with the RTM install media.

Ok so am i to understand that once windows 8.1 RTM becomes available on the 18th, registered users can download the new release?

I just purchased an 8.0 Pro OEM version and updated the 8.1 product key with the one supplied.

Or do i need to install the 8.0 version and wait till the 18th for the RTM?

I'm puzzled by exactly how people will get from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 General Availability.

Microsoft have said that they won't make ISOs available to "consumers", which I've assumed means people without subscriptions to MSDN/ Technet/ etc. However anyone could install the 8.1 Preview, with no subscription to anything.

Microsoft have also said that you'll be able to get from 8.1 Preview to 8.1 GA, and keep your personal files, but need to reinstall apps, which I also assume means they will be providing a mechanism to do it.

However, as above, I don't think they will be providing ISO files to all Preview users, many of whom won't have a Technet etc. subscription.

So I was wondering if they would do it through the Store, but you'll have to type in your Windows 8 Product Key (or it'll read it off the motherboard for preinstalled Win8). But I'm guessing.

Any more guesses on what the mechanism will be...?!

Windows 8 users can upgrade though the Windows Store on the 18th. You won't get anything you can download and save, not as far as I know anyway. Files will be downloaded to do the upgrade but you won't be prompted to save them and they are likely deleted once the update is complete. To actually get an ISO you'll have to buy a license for 8.1. Unless you have a TechNet or MSDN subscription. If you actually have the RTM ISO you can install with one of the 8.1 install keys and then activate with your 8.0 product key. I've done it that way.

If they allowed you to go from preview to RTM what's to stop somebody from, downloading the Preview ISO, install it with the Microsoft supplied Preview key, and then get a free upgrade to the RTM? I don't think you'll be able to go from Preview to RTM, I've been wrong before though. If you have a link to where it was said you could I wouldn't mind having a look at it. They are going to have to check Product codes or something. My two 8.1 PC's have Media Center added so the code in the registry is my Media Center code not the 8.X code used to install 8.1. On my laptop I used one of my TechNet 8.1 codes, on my desktop I used my 8.0 code to activate. But as I said, after that I added Media Center. They are also going to run into issues trying to get someone to type in their Windows 8 OEM embedded codes, there is no COA sticker with that code on it.

Also, is there anything more you can tell us on how the upgrade from 8.1 Preview to the real 8.1 will work?

I've seen it elsewhere too - it's mentioned in the tutorial here too, and I think predates that Blog post.

•If upgrading from Windows 8.1 Preview/Windows RT 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 final/Windows 8.1 RT final (when released October 18th 2013), you will "Keep personal files only", but will lose your settings and have to reinstall all of your apps.

And from the 8.1 Preview FAQ:

Will I be able to keep my files, settings, and apps if I install Windows 8.1 Preview?

...lots of other stuff and then...
When you install subsequent editions of Windows 8.1 you'll be able to keep your personal files, but you'll need to reinstall your apps.

Well I guess you can go from Preview to final. > Additionally, you'll also need your Windows 8 product key when you update to the final edition of Windows 8.1 from the preview.<

Yes - maybe the Update will be clever enough to read it from the BIOS though?; if 3rd party apps can do it then you'd hope Microsoft could!

Although it gets more complicated for people who've changed from the original install, either by adding a Pro Pack or something more complex like using a Volume Licensed edition or whatever.

Maybe, it would make sense to do that and save some people a headache. I know the TechNet 8.1 RTM ISO won't use my laptops embedded code. I have no idea if it actually looks for it or not but I get prompted to enter a code during the install. That may be because it will only install with an 8.1 code. The 8.0 TechNet ISO reads the embedded code and installs the matching version, 8 core in my case. I was really hoping the 8.1 ISO would do the same, but it didn't. :(

Is the TechNet ISO and the leak ISO the same? Try install using 8.1 leaked install key, then activate using the embedded key.

Yes that will work, I did that on my desktop PC and used a Windows 8 key to activate. On my laptop I didn't know what the embedded key was and had no easy way to find it at that moment. I had already started doing a clean install and was prompted to enter a product code. I just used one of my TechNet 8.1 codes and moved on. It was after that, that I researched how to retrieve the code. The scripts that are around read what's in the Registry not what's stored in the BIOS. If you've upgraded to Pro or added Media center they will give you the wrong key. I used a utility called rweverything to retrieve it. At least I think its what I want, I have yet to test it to see if it works. That won't be until I have to reinstall on my laptop.

EDIT: As far as I know the leaked ISO's are the same as the TechNet ISO's. The OEM's just got them first and leaked them, before they were released to TechNet. The ones on bit torrent may have been modified, and not in a good way, but the source was what Microsoft released to the OEM's like Dell, HP, etc.

My theory is that, because the leaked ISOs were originally intended for OEMs, they were intended for installation on a new PC without needing to worry about Upgrading some previous installation. Therefore the current ISOs aren't good at upgrading.

My hope is that with the General Availability release next week, whatever appears will have a decent upgrade mechanism built in which copes with embedded keys, 8.1 Preview PCs, and such-like.

I'll be watching my TechNet account for any new releases. I have yet to do an actual upgrade from the ISO, my two installs were clean installs. Other than not using my laptops embedded code it was no different from what I saw using my 8.0 ISO. As far as the install process goes anyway. In a way it actually saves me a step as I would normally have to install 8 Core, then upgrade to 8 Pro and then add Media Center. Now I can just skip having to install Core and install Pro. Then just do the one add features for Media Center.

No, the leaked ISO was intended for OEM, however it depends on the key you used to activate it, whether it's a OEM key, or Retail, or VLK. The ISO works for upgrade however.

VL Pro is a different ISO from the 8 multi edition ISO, it is on TechNet anyway. 8.1 TechNet keys are Retail. The 8.1 multi edition ISO will accept OEM keys though.
