Hi all,

1. I currently use Windows 7 OEM. If I buy Windows 8 upgrade, would I be able to get an 8.1 ISO and perform a clean install of Windows 8.1? Or would I only be able to do a clean install of 8 and update to 8.1

2. Would I be able to install that Windows 8 on a PC with a different motherboard?

Thanks

1) You should be able to buy Windows 8.1 after the 18 October.

2) You can only upgrade on the motherboard with the current Windows 7 OEM.

It might be cheaper to buy 8 upgrade now than full 8.1 in a month (at least in Poland), so if it was clear that I could get an ISO, it seems like a good idea.

On the other hand, buying standalone retail 8.1 would allow me to change the motherboard later? :)

Unless it's changed in the last week or so, Microsoft said that they won't make an ISO available to "consumers" upgrading from 8 to 8.1.

You can create an ISO or a bootable flash drive of the 8.1 upgrade during the upgrade process, after you download the image. It's one of the choices you can make, Install now, create bootable flash drive or make an iso. I created the iso with the preview and the retail version should be the same.

I'm not sure there will be an image to download for people going from 8 to 8.1?

Unlike the 8.1 Preview, MS say the only upgrade route for "consumers" (which I assume means people without subscriptions to Technet/MSDN etc.) from 8 to 8.1 will be via the Store. We'll find out in a couple of weeks, I guess...

The Windows 7 OEM you have on the old motherboard is not transferable to the new mothertboard.

You would have NO original software to upgrade from on the new motherboard.

Thanks! One more dumb question:
Are we sure that one would be able to change motherboards with a full copy of 8.1? (Is the license for 8.1 available?)
