windows 8 install on older laptop

I am quite impressed with the install. I am running a older hp zv5000 laptop with 1 1/2 gig memory and the 3 GHz cpu. I had only two problems first one was with the ac97 sound driver fixed that with a genaric driver for windows 7,
2 problem I have one device on the device manager that I don't know what it is there is no name. not much info on it but " \VEN_104C&DEV_8201&SUBSYS_006B103C&REV_01\4&77bb05a&0&22A4 was configured with null ()." I have let 2 other people try the laptop and they were quite impressed with the speed. on the down side I am not sure where to look for the "original start menu programs " like note pad, calculator ect .

Both programs can be found in the Windows folder. Using the program called Metro Controller, you can set the machine to act more like Windows 7 with the original start menu, yet keep the ribbon interface. You can download the Metro Controller here MetroController Download - Softpedia

Hi, tcarney, and welcome to the Eight Forums!

Just type the name of the program on the start screen (literally, just start typing).
I'll use Notepad in this example:

    Right-click on "Notepad":

At the bottom of the screen you will se an option to "Pin." Click it:

Look on the Start Screen. It will be tacked on at the end. Just drag and arrange it to your heart's content:

I am highly dismayed when it is suggested one disable the Start Screen.
One might as well stick with Win7 in such instances.

I think that device may be a card reader you may want to try out this theory by trying to install a driver; HP Support & Drivers | United States
You will most likely have to use compatibility mode by right clicking on the installer and selecting Troubleshoot compatibility

After 3 days of fruitless searching and multiple attempts to install 8.1 I finally found the answer. My hardware does not have the required LAHF/SAHF support nor does it support Prefe6tchW. Why this matters now withe the 8.1 update when it does not matter with 8 is beyond me. See here: Can't...
I have a new laptop with win8 and I really like it. I also have an older Dell Insproin 1521 with an AMD 64 bit processor, 4 gig of RAM and a 160 gig SSD.
