Will there be a Windows 8.1 final release ISO download?

I have a Dell Studio XPS 8100 that is almost 3 1/2 years old. I upgraded to Windows 8 by the clean install method from an ISO disc that I downloaded from the MS site. Does anyone know if an ISO download will be available for the Windows 8.1 final release? Clean installs tend to work better especially on older computers. Upgrades can be problematic in my experience.

    Thanks,

    Glades

The more recent answer I've seen from Microsoft is No there won't be.

In the comments from this blog post:
Mark your calendars for Windows 8.1!

Microsoft answer the ISO question as follows:

I think "consumers" means people who haven't got a Technet or MSDN subscription, who can currently access the 8.1 RTM.

Also if you buy the retail version, it will presumably get you an ISO, but this won't be free.

Why do you need to go through the Microsoft store to do this 8.1 update? I would like it to come down just like all the other updates do now or give the option to download the upgrade packages if you have several machines.

Ask Microsoft? I don't think anybody here knows why they are doing it though the store, other than to promote the store. That and its free if you are already running Windows 8. If you are running Windows 7 or earlier you'll be buying it online or in a retail store. I have no idea what you'll get if you buy it online, hopefully you'll get an option to save an ISO file to burn to DVD. Personally I think this could backfire on Microsoft and end up generating a lot of bad press if a lot of these upgrades go south. Just trying to recover their systems back to Windows 8 could be a problem for some users if they don't create recovery media before hand. This is a big update and the Windows kernel is updated. It's more than your usual service pack type of deal. I think of it as Windows 8 Second Edition.

There should be a Windows 8.1 ISO download at some point for those who buy Windows full 8.1. But to upgrade from 8 you should use the Store upgrade option. 8.1 full ISO seems to require a new license key and your old Windows 8 one won't work, while the Store upgrade is just an upgrade. I say this because I tried to use the 8.1 ISO from MSDN with my current 8 license key from MSDN and it did not work, I had to put in the new 8.1 license key it gave me.

You can't use a Windows 8 Product Code to install, it will only accept Windows 8.1 Product Codes during install. There are leaked install codes that will let you install but they won't activate. They are blocked from activation. Once installed you can activate with a Windows 8 product Code. I've done it both ways. On my laptop I just entered one of my TechNet 8.1 Pro keys. On my desktop I installed with one of the leaked install codes and then entered a Windows 8 Code to activate. Both ways worked just fine.

That explains that then. I only ran it on one machine and only tried to enter a key once. Nobody else in my house has any real desire to test anything other than me so i only have one machine on Windows 8.

I was a bit impatient on the first install so when it didn't use my embedded key I just entered my 8.1 TechNet key. Reading up on it here latter on I did it differently on my desktop. More just to see if it would work and use my Windows 8 code. It did so that was good. It wouldn't have bothered me much if I had had to use another 8.1 TechNet code. I have MSDN codes too, so I'm not going to run out.

I updated the bios for my system and lost my raid ssd drive. Rather than go through the hassle of re-installing Windows 8.0 Pro and then do the upgrade thing on Oct 18th, I decided to go straight to 8.1. I did a clean 8.1 RTM install and then used my 8.0 key to activate and used another key to install WCM. Everything looks good with the Windows 8.1 Pro WMC system.

My laptop and another system are both running Windows 8.0 Pro and they were upgraded with the $40 deal so I will wait until October 18th and do the upgrade through the store.

One thing I did note is if you use the Windows Store under 8.1 for anything, even free installations, you will need to use a Microsoft account.

I couldn't agree with you more on ugrades vs clean installs.

Upgrades have always been a PITA by my experience. Hopefully MS will release an ISO to the general public to do so. I'm also willing to pay a fair price for an ISO either via download or by snail mail, although I think shouldn't have to. After all, I bought the 8 Pro disc.
