    Windows 8.1 upgrade

Currently I purchased a new Desktop AIO. came with Windows 8 basic. I had a copy of Windows 8 Pro which I purchased when it first came out.
I upgraded the new system to 8 Pro and used the Key that came with the DVD's.
Soon we will be able to go to the Windows store and get the free upgrade.
Question is if I have to restore to factory settings how will I get back to 8.1 Pro?
I know how to get back to 8 Pro but can I go to the windows store and get the upgrade again?
Or can I get the ISO file of 8.1 Pro and do a clean install from a burned copy?
Also if the new systems have the key in the Bios won't it be a problem for registering?
    Thank You
    Larry

Do you image? If so, try to label and keep each version of Windows you have running.

    Windows 8.1 upgrade

Sorry but I don't even know what Image is.
usually I run other systems under VM.
I have only had this machine about a month and twice windows has locked up and all Support seems to know is re install factory settings. I was wondering how much I would have to do to get back to 8.1 pro.

With no ISO you would factory restore to 8 core, then go to add features and enter your 8 Pro key to bump up to 8 Pro. Then upgrade to 8.1 Pro though the store.
My TechNet 8.1 ISO would not use my embedded factory key to install with. It will not install unless you enter a Windows 8.1 product code. Windows 8 product codes are rejected during installation. Once installed though you can enter and activate with a Windows 8 Product Code. If it sounds confusing it is? There are install product codes that will let you install but they will not activate. From the sounds of it, the average consumer that upgrades from 8 to 8.1 though the store will not get access to an ISO file. If you buy it online and download it maybe? You'll get a disk if you buy it in a retail store.

Listen to alphanumeric for what you should do now.

In reference to imaging I am a firm believer that one should have images of their system on external media. I use usb external drives but there are other ways.
I thought you were a novice asking for help with this but now realize you are proficient.

If you need help with imaging I will gladly help you but have a feeling you were puling my leg.

alphanumeric I thank you for the response.
I have some lousy luck with this new machine and all tech support seems to advise is to go back to the factory settings. that was early on and so far I am hoping the the worst is over.

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD.

Did you make the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

You can order the Microsoft official HP/Compaq OEM Recovery disks from the HP/Compaq OEM manufacturer's website.

The Recovery USB drive & Recovery Partition can be very problematic, I recommend you also make a Windows System Image.

Hi Peter2 I am by no means proficient in working with systems. I do read as much as possible on forums. I also try searching for ans. as much as I can. I also try Ubuntu but never have succeeded in getting usb device to be used for booting.
I have also done changes in the registry and so far never messed up.

    >>No problem at all. I am not a tech but am a firm believer in imaging. Basically get a good program for free if you wish. I would mention one but am not sure I can do that here. Once your system is stable, you can send an image of your system to an external hard drive that is bigger than your system and when ever you have disaster strike, you can recover to the state it was when you imaged. The drive is wiped clean and the image installed.

Now about your current problem, I think everyone is trying to help you get your pc stable and perhaps you are not understanding it.
When you get a new pc, usually there is feature that allows you to make a couple of dvds so if you have future trouble you can use these to reinstall your system to a factory state. That is the first thing to look for.
If you read their comments carefully, you may understand better. Give it a try.
