OK, I used Belarc Advisor to get the key. Problem is that it must be asking for the PK for 8.1 and not 8.0. So, as someone else mentioned, it looks like I'll have to wait for the "official" 8.1 upgrade due out October 18. Sigh . . .

    Preview is long gone, and the "official" 8.1 isn't there yet. So, I wait . . . and wait . . . and wait . . .

    I don't understand that either.

However if you really wanted to try the 8.1 preview, you could still download the ISO version - Option Two in this tutorial.

Thanks, David, but after reading, it seems that if I install 8.1 preview, and then 8.1 final, I'll lose everything but my files, which I already keep on an external hard drive.

Quite frankly, I keep so many programs on my computer that installing them once on this new one is more than I want to do. I don't want to have to reinstall a gazillion programs more than once!

I'm going back to read again, just so I'll be sure of what I think I know. OK, I've read the warnings, and it seems I read correctly the first time, so I'll just wait until October 18.

To get your Product Key run this vbs script:

    ShowKey.vbs

    EDIT---

You will get a popup with your ID & Product Key:

These keys will let you install 8.1 RTM, it won't accept Windows 8 keys for the install.

    Windows 8 PRO: XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB
They've already been posted in another thread and you can't activate with them so don't flame me for posting them.
Once you've got it installed you can use your Windows 8 key to activate. I just clicked activate now and I got a change product key option.
Another way to do it is Product Key Number - Change in Windows 8

All the key reader and scripts read the key from registry. And if you have installed Windows 7 on a Windows 8 OEM notebook you don't get the Windows 8 key. Only "RWeverything" reads the key from BIOS - even if you have installed Windows 7.

Says Microsoft. But that's not the truth. See this post.

Thanks again, David. As you've probably seen by now, I got the key with Belarc Advisor; however, your VB script worked too.

BTW, I stupidly installed Magical Jelly Bean and wound up with my home page and search engine hijacked. When will I ever learn?
