Hi all!

I've got 2 Hard Drives in my laptop. 500GB and 80GB.

I want to install win 8 on entire 80gb of 2nd HDD. When I'm trying to create partition installer don't create system reserved partition. It's weird because I've got previously win 8 with 350MB system reserved partition on this HDD but I format them (hdd).

Now installer don't create system reserved (even after [diskpart - > clean])... is it normal? Should I install win 8 without system reserved? Is it necessary for something?

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    Win 7 64 Prof
    System Manufacturer/Model
    MSI GT683

    i7 2630QM
    Memory
    4GB
    Graphics Card(s)
    nV GTX 560M
The installer probably grabbed another active partition to place the bootmgr. If your 500GB disk is disk0 and the 80GB disk is disk1 (in Disk Management), that is what most likely happened.

Thanks for fast reply!

Yes, 500GB disk is disk0, 80 is disk1... but I don't want to place anything from windows 8 on my disk0.

I want to do clean install on 2nd drive and don't want to unscrew my laptop to disconnect first hdd. I don't want to dual boot - I want to use bios boot menu.

What should I do?

Then you have to disconnect the 500GB disk during the installation of Win8 (pull the power or Sata cable). That way you get a completely independent Win8 installation which you can boot by changing the BIOS boot order. That is the way I installed my Win8 - very practical.

The way you installed Win8 now, you have a traditional "double boot".

PS. I just saw that you are talking about a laptop - is that correct. Is that a laptop with 2 disk bays??

Yes. MSI GT683 (15''6 with 2x HDD and RAID support).

Next weird thing - I just change boot settings and set my 80GB as first in boot sequence. Before I made diskpart -> clean all on this hdd. Now windows 8 installer made 350MB system reserved partition. No dual boot.

/e: boot sequence or diskpart "clean all" could be solution :) I marked this topic as solved.

Hmm, that is a trick I never tried. But maybe that is the answer. I will keep that in mind. Looks like you are all set now - right?

I just want to put out there that I had nearly the same problem with the same resolution. I couldn't install Windows 8 (same error message) unless the SSD was the first boot device in Bios, which means I had to delete its partition and set my USB drive as the second boot device, so it would fail over. Very odd.
