    This is a working page:

How to clean install Windows 8.1 if you have OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8 product key?
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../Reimaging.pdf

    OEM Specific Information
Organizations do not have the right to reimage by using OEM media.
An OEM image can only be preloaded on a PC by the OEM during manufacturing. An image can be individually recovered by the organization (or a service provider it chooses) by using the recovery media. The OEM recovery media should match the product
As with all OEM manufacturer's PC to do a clean install, you use the OEM recovery media.

To do a custom clean install on OEM manufacturer's PC, as you would do on self-build you need to buy a Product Key.

    The only legal download:
Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 ISO - Download or Create
You will need to buy a Product Key to download.

What exactly is meant by " You will need to buy a Product Key " ?

Mate I would personally give it a week or two before spending money, the issue may be corrected or turn out to be a peripheral or some kind of software you have blocking it. If you've paid once already, why pay again unless yo really need to. You're safe for a while as it is?

I would like to add a SSD and do a clean install, but the key in the BIOS will not work for a download of a ISO.

This is why I asked about the key. I can't find an answer for this.

    I have a question....

When installing on a OEM machine (that came with no disk): I have the OEM key extracted and the machine came with Windows 8. Recently it upgraded from Windows Store and it's running 8.1.

When I test the OEM key on a VBox machine with Windows Single Language ISO, the key fails.
Does it need to be done only on THE SAID computer for it to work?

Do not test the activation on the second computer (for example VirtualBox or VMware Player), because then you have to call the activation robot.

Windows 8 Pro license transfer a new Windows 8.1 computer?

If you receive an error message: This key didn't work, please check it and try again, or try a different key.

    Select Cancel.

Now you will see text that says: This product key is being used on another PC. Please try a different key.

Then you need select Call support.

NOTE: The activation robot asks you how many PCs you have installed Windows on. The correct answer is number 1.

Ok, so from my understanding... when it finds the OEM key laying on UEFI, it automagically bypasses all this... of course, when installing on the proper OEM machine... right?

No, you can not transfer the OS to a new PC, as this is a OEM manufacturer's PC licence.

The transfer must include the software, proof of purchase, and, if provided with the computer, an authentic Windows label such as the certificate of authenticity label including the product key. You may not keep any copies of the software or any earlier version. Before any permitted transfer, the other party must agree that this agreement applies to the transfer and use of the software.
