Building new system using existing SSD boot drive

Hi everyone, first time poster looking for some advice.

I built a large desktop system a few years back and it's been upgraded with various bits and pieces including an SSD boot drive. I'm looking at putting together a much smaller system in a Shuttle XH61V and I want to use my existing 2.5" SSD. Can I just put the SSD in and clean install Win 8 from the original system builder disk I bought or will something go wrong because there's already an installation on the drive? Thanks in advance for any help!

Are you intending to use an SSD cache drive as a primary SSD boot drive? If so, I think it can be done; however, you would have to do a clean install to completely wipe and rebuild the partition structure via a clean install. However, I'm a bit concerned about the size of the caching SSD; in that, it may not be large enough (over time) to support your new OS going forward. Here's an interesting article for reference. Good luck with any decision you may make:

I have a 240GB Corsair Force 3 SSD at the moment which is proving more than sufficient as the primary drive (currently using less than 70GB) as I only store applications and catalogue files on it - all media is stored on a Synology DS213/external HDDs. I think I remember reading that I can add an mSATA SSD or an extra 2.5" internal HDD into the XH61V if needed too which would be handy. As I have every document and my system settings stored in SkyDrive and each catalogue file connected to Lightroom and iTunes backed up to Dropbox I don't mind a clean install, just wanted to know if I would need to format the drive first or if it would just work plugging it into the new box and firing it up with the installation disk installed. Not sure how I would format it as I only have access to the one PC!

Am I right in saying that if the new system is to be my only computer i.e. retiring my existing desktop, then I can use the licence for Win 8 on the new system?

Do a clean install and delete the current one that's on it. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html?filter[2]
You may have to activate online on the new PC. Whether you can legally transfer your current install depends on what version it is and what the EULA says. Some versions are not supposed to be transferable but what option do you have if say your motherboard fails. Is it a complete new system, motherboard swap etc.

Cheers for the tips. Yeah it's a completely new replacement, the only thing coming over would be the SSD and Win 8 licence (hopefully!).

The EULA for a System Builder states that you can move the OS to another system that you own, but it has to be removed from the original system, which from your post is not an issue.
Do a Clean Install on your new system hardware, as mentioned previously.
