As far as I know, the RTM will need to be a clean install on Windows 8.1 Preveiw setups.

hmm, I already had to reinstall windows 7 pro because the hd died, then I had to put the windows 8 pro upgrade on it,
I really do not want to go through this again.
I guess I will wait till final comes out and use this as the first test machine to get it so I see how it goes

Hello Robin,

Yep, basically it will be a clean install from the 8.1 Preview to 8.1 RTM. :(

If upgrading from Windows 8.1 Preview/Windows RT 8.1 Preview to Windows 8.1 final/Windows 8.1 RT final (when released later this year), you will "Keep personal files only", but will lose your settings and have to reinstall all of your apps.

The warning box at the top of the tutorial below has some more info about all of this if you like.

thanks guys, we are only talking about a month or two, I can wait till it officially comes out in the windows store, I do not want to do it on my windows 8 pro laptop that came with the OS, I would rather do the final on my test machine anyway to see what horrors or not happen.
