Today I installed a new hard drive on my laptop. The drive was unformated, thought Win8 would walk me through formatting. Instead it formatted the hard drive automatically, pleasant surprise.

I guess Microsoft didn't want to waste anyone time no more in stopping and asking you to format the drive. I'm sure they saved 30 sec off the installation time :)

I bought an OEM hard drive (no install disc), was anticipating a hassle.
Got a great deal, $45 320gb (no tax or ship charge).

And as we all know, time = money... so shave off the time, and you're saving money!

It's nice to know that they format it for you during the installation, though. Very handy!

Why's that? I don't see what the big issue is about a drive format.

I think its a matter of assumptions. MS made the right assumption that somebody who was trying to install WDP on an unformatted hard disk would probably prefer everything done for them. One is free to partition per choice, then install. Different strokes for different folks.

My Computer

So what you are saying is that on a new build I can not have all of my hard drives connected when I install Windows? Thats a pain.

When did I say that? But remember in SF we do advise people to keep other hard drives disconnected during install because of windows proclivity to place boot files on other disks. And again this is WDP, not RTM.

My Computer

Sure you can have them all connected... But I normally create a boot partition anyway, regardless of HDD size. It's just a habit of mine.

Good point.

I just hate when Microsoft thinks they know best. Thats all I am trying to say. I am just trying to understand there thinking about this. Sometimes when they do things I just go

The one thing that I wish they would do is a unified installation of Windows. So that if you install a retail version of Windows you can just remove the hard drive and put it in your new computer. Thats what Apple does and I realy like that.

Side note: Do you watch F1? Q3 is on right now. Or are you a V8 Supercar fan. Bathurst 1000 is tomarrow.

Thats because its all identical Apple hardware. MS doesn't make the hardware windows is installed on.

All Nicrosoft have to do is install of the drivers when the OS is installed. They tested this years ago with a early non-released version of Vista. They choose not to press forward with it and have not, as far as I am aware, of doing it again.

With the Mac, it crashes twice then it works in most cases. Sometimes it takes more restarts untill all of the drivers needed for boot are loaded.

MS actually spent a fortune including drivers in win7, you would have noticed win7 installs a lot of drivers out of the box. But theres simply too much diverse hardware out there to include everything.

That's why I think they are trying to push for UEFI and specific hardware manufacturers, to reduce the development cost overhead for adapting to lots and lots of different hardware.

UEFI is one part of it. However they only need to include the drivers and nothing else. It would only take 1/2 to 1 GB. Well its late and F1 Qulifing is over so night.

we do advise people to keep other hard drives disconnected during install because of windows proclivity to place boot files on other disks.

It would not be prudent for those who risk corrupting HDDs (no matter how small the risk) unnecessary, by not doing so. That said i don't know why people want to install an OS on a secondary HDD. What's wrong with the primary one?
