It would not be prudent for those who risk corrupting HDDs (no matter how small the risk) unnecessary, by not doing so. That said i don't know why people want to install an OS on a secondary HDD. What's wrong with the primary one?
In essence, aem, when you install on a different partition, it might as well be another HD or SSD.

But why would you want to do that? If i have a secondary HDD i would only want to use it for storing data.

Some have more than just one secondary HDD or SSD, aem.

Some people would buy, say, a 100GB HDD that they would use exclusively for Linux builds, or whatever, and so they'd have those installations on there, with their Windows installations on other HD's.
Add to that the really small capacity of SSD's (if you're not keen on spending >$400) and there's almost no choice but to use different drives for installations.

This happened on a single unformatted HD setup, with no other options.
I would think if there had been another drive there would have been options.

I have 3 OS's on 3 different drives and do not want to tripple boot. I can select which OS I want to boot into on startup.

if you have more than one operating system the installation will ask where you want it.
