I have upgraded a pc with windows xp to windows 8 pro using a retail disk bougth in a store. When the installation had finished and I logged in, I couldn't access the "More PC Settings" in the settings charm. When I click it, the bar closes but nothing else happens. I have tried accessing it from the control panel like this

,but again nothing happens. When I search for some of the settings I know is part of "More PC Settings", they do show up, but neither do these react when clicked.

I have tried using the sfc /scannow several times, but without any changes. I had thougth of doing a clean instal, but I can't access the rigth settings beacuse of this problem.

It is activated, and as I had just upgraded it, the button have never worked.

I really need some help on this one.

When I am in the advanced startup menu

I don't have the option to use a device. The dvd I am using is the retail disk I got from the store, and I am not sure this is the right one.

Presac,

You'll see "Use a device" in Advanced Startup Options if you have a bootable device (ex: USB/DVD) connected when you boot to Advanced Startup Options. :)

Since you have a retail DVD, you would boot directly from the DVD instead of going through the advanced startup menu to install Windows 8.

At what step are you doing this at?

I would ask you to clarify exactly how you did the Windows 8 install. As far as I know, you cannot do an Upgrade install, but it must be a clean install. The terms used for such things can be confusing, but I have not actually tried upgrading from XP, so I may be incorrect.

Also, did you use Windows Easy Transfer or any other method to move your XP files into the Windows 8 install?

The "Use a Device" option might only be available if you choose the Settings-Change PC Settings-General options from the charms bar, which it seems you stated you do not have or cannot access. I am assuming your description of the selection is a typo, since it saying something other than what I show might indicate a problem in itself.

It will show up as Advanced Startup on the bottom of the page, as Brink mentions. It might also be present if you choose one of the other options from within Windows 8. I suppose Brink and I have a misunderstanding about it only being available for OEM PCs, but I believe it basically just reboots the system, allowing you to boot to another media.

Upgrade install is fine for XP, and if the OP had been using Upgrade Assistant instead of a DVD it's hard to do anything else as the options to create an ISO install file don't appear in XP. (They didn't for me at least, on more than one XP computer).

The only thing is you have to reinstall more than you would if you were upgrading from later Windows versions.

That's right Alex. You'll see "Use a device" in Advanced Startup Options if you have a bootable device (ex: USB/DVD) connected when you boot to Advanced Startup Options. :)

I have tried using the "Reset your PC" in the troubleshoot section of advances startup options, and it worked.
