New laptop, already big W8 problems

I'm pretty frustrated right now, so I'll just list out what happened and see if anyone can help.

- Got a new laptop not too long ago (5 hours?). Samsung Series 5 535U3C
- Started it up; everything is cool. Boots right into Windows 8 setup and everything is fine
- Shortly afterwards, I go right into checking Windows Updates (as I usually do when I get a new computer). Checking for updates goes for 30 minutes and still nothing happens... I find this extremely odd. I see that the laptop is loud and HOT; VERY unlike it's "ultrabook" facade. I decide to restart the system.
- I restart the system, try to find updates again. I see 61. I start installing them and get stuck at 0% for... Ever. It does not move. I check Task Manager and see "Windows Modules Installer Worker" taking up 20-70% of my CPU for seemingly no reason; which explains as to why the laptop is so damn hot and loud. I end the process; it comes back again.
- I decide to just abandon that installation and I take the OS and tell it to restore to factory settings and reinstall Windows 8
- I go through the setup again; smooth sailing
- Guess whose back? Windows Modules Installer Worker. Not welcome.
- Guess what happens? Still cant install updates.
- And my multitouch touchpad no longer works... A minor issue but... What the hell?

Any fixes for an extremely moody laptop?

Edit: My screen brightness doesnt work either. The hotkeys doesnt work and going to the sidebar to change the brightness yields no change.

I presume you have chacked and verified your network settings.

As for the display settings, I'm not sure what to suggest, except checking for updated drivers from the manufacturer. Yeah, I know this is a new machine, but there could be drivers newer than the ones included in the pre-installed image. I suggest checking that even before you run Windows Update.

It's very likely that Windows Update is already doing an automatic check for updates. In that case, firing it up manually might result in the symptoms you have seen: it seems "stuck" at 0% and then eventually fails.

Let the machine run a while (like overnight) (without trying to run WU on your own) and see if it picks up any updates. I've seen WU take a long time to (seemingly) do anything, even on older operating systems when nothing else was running.

I would return to Samsung for replacement.

The multitouch touchpad and the brightness was working perfectly fine before I reinstalled Windows 8 via the Generals tab of the settings menu. I believe the hardware itself is fine; I think redoing the drivers should make these things work. The thing is; I cant do a lot with my computer when its CPU usage is always being atleast half used by some Windows Modules Installer Worker...

Sorry for double post, totally didnt see the multiquote button till now...

The drivers should work, but thats not my main concern right now.

I left the laptop working ALL night (6 hours or so?) and I come back to find:

- Windows MOdules Installer worker is still going insane.
- I still cant update worth a damn.

Im convinced that the laptop is fine; the software is simply being very, very, VERY moody. I have not had a good W8 experience with this first impression.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of this Windows Modules Installer Worker thing and just get the updates properlly? That'd be really nice...

Edit: On a bright (pun intended) note, my screen brightness now suddenly works...

Combo Edit: On an even nicer note, that Windows Modules Installer Worker thing seem to have subsided for now when I tried to install this update: (Download Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2771431) from Official Microsoft Download Center) The update said that "it was not applicable to my system" when I tried installing it, so I thought it was a dead end, but the "Windows Module Installer Worker" thing has gone away entirely, so the update seems to have done it's job.

Unfortunately, another service "Antimalware Service Executable" is now eating away at 5-20% of my CPU continuously. Not as extreme as before, but still wish that wasnt there... Any fixes for that?

Also, I still dont know if I can update, but I'll give it a shot now.

Triple Edit:

Windows Module Installer Worker seems alive and well; but only when I run Windows Update... That seems to be normal behaviour, so I won't worry about it too much yet.

Quad Post:

I seem to be updating okay. The Antimalware thing is still sucking up resources however :C

Just to recap on what seems to be wrong:

- Antimalware Service Executable taking up a 1/10 to a 1/4 of CPU usage (how do I disable this?)
- My multitouch on the trackpad doesnt function (Ive searched for the drivers, but all I find is Windows 7 drivers... Anyone know where to find the Windows 8 ones?)
- My battery life is too low (All reviews point to me getting 4-5.5 hours of battery while I'm only getting 3-4 hours. Anyone know any awesome tweaks or somthing I may be doing wrong?)

Anyone have any ideas?

The modules installer should be set to Manual.

Try downloading 4 or 5 updates at a time. Not all at once.

I believe this part is normal after installing the June(?) set of updates. It's because there is something in that set of updates which is trying to save space by compressing some files on the PC. It takes a bunch of CPU and disk performance.

TiWorker.exe Excessive CPU Usage After Windows Update
I think it's "Improvement 2" here:
KB2821895

I think you just need to let it work away for a while and then it should return to normal. It did for me, anyway.

Can't help with the screen brightness etc. though - it does suggest there are other problems.

To me the most intelligent thing to do would be to return it, and get another unit.

Computers are like any other piece of machinery; there can always be a lemon. . .:what:

I guess you guys didnt read my most recent posts?

Most of the problems were fixed. It isnt the hardware; the laptop is perfectly good. It's the software.

Once windows is restored, refreshed, or reset, its never really the same. Problems will pop up here and there. If you can do a clean reinstall, you should do that, otherwise the best solution really is to return it and start with an uncorrupted unit.

Run SW updates - on the main start screen - this updates the BIOS/UEFI and often fixes issues with Windows 8 not behaving - touchpad issues being fixed come to mind. I hear this a lot on Samsung units!

Hi, i just boight a 535U3C (a03mx) and had some similar problems. I'm halfway done with windows updates after a couple days.

About the brightness and touchpad you can check the "Support Center" app. It's a samsung app, you can find it from the start screen, then go to Status. I ramdomly lose the fn keys (only volume works) and from status you can solve that. There is also a "SW Update" app that gets you the windows 8 drivers, updates and bios; you might want to check that too.

The problem i'm having now, besides the fn keys thing, is the windows 8 apps. I can't install anything from the "Store", i choose anything, click install and it stays downloading for a while then it says the app can't open. Do you have that problem?
