no UEFI device in boot menu

I have a desktop PC Acer XC600, the hard disk is formatted in the UEFI-Scheme. Now I want to do a clean install of a fresh Win8, but I cannot manage to boot into UEFI-mode, neither from DVD or USB.

I can reach a boot menu by pressing F12, but there is nothing like shown in the article about installing Win8 in UEFI mode. Only standard bios devices show up. There are simply no UEFI devices. I tried different usb sticks, dvds, formatted them different ways, but the best I can get is the point where setup says "cannot install because the disk is formatted GPT"

But the acutal system is definitely running in UEFI mode (?)

There has to be a way to set your BIOS to do a UEFI install. In my case, when I hit f12, I am offered a choice of two options on the boot menu and they read something like this:

    Windows Boot Manager
    Patriot Pyro
    Optiarc DVD
    UEFI Optiarc DVD

Now, that is not the exact wording. You need to consult you mobo manual for how to set that option on the boot menu.

OK after hours I got this far:

I try to get an ISO file of Windows 8 64bit onto an USB Stick to install it in UEFI mode.
The device did not show up in the boot menu, because bios obviously does a test if all files are present to start in UEFI mode. On my usb-stick the file \efi\boot\bootx64.efi was missing!!

I followed the instructions given in the article UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows regarding Win7 in chapter 11. This was the first time the usb device was present in the start menu!!

But that file from Win7 does not work with Win8. I got the same file out of the install.wim of the Win8 ISO, and now installation starts, the Win8 logo appears, but soon a message appears complaining about a missing bootloader.efi file. So the problem ist definitely concerning files/bootloader on the stick, not a bios thing.

Now the question ist how to get the bootloader of Win8-UEFI really working?
And I think the article UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows should be changed. The file bootx64.efi must be present also for Win8 setup media.

Use the Windows 8 ISO and install via Acer's recommendations here:

    Acer | Manually Upgrade

Check to make sure you are on the latest BIOS here:

BIOS Acer BIOS - UEFI for Windows 8 (Not for Upgrades) P11.A3 3.1 MB 2013/04/17
    Acer | Download

That tutorial has worked fine for many "as is" so how can you make a recommendation for change when you haven't been able to complete an install to verify that the change even works?

Good luck and I hope my recommendations get you on the right track.

OK thanks I hope I can fix my installation media.

I wanted to point out regarding the tutorial:
Step 11. notes that this step is necessary for an installation of windows 7 only, but the presence of bootx64.efi applys to win8 as well, in ordner to be installed using UEFI. Without that file the device does not show in the boot menu.

OK, so are you saying that with your recommended addition, it does show a UEFI option in your boot menu, and you have tested that the installation now works with your recommended change? If not, my advice is to just follow the Acer tutorial and use the ISO and you should be just fine. Good luck.

    Ok I got confused myself.
The original ISO from microsoft can be installed right away using the tutorial via an usb drive, that's fine.

I started making my own installation media containing language packs. To have an example of such integrated iso's to see what those files look like I downloaded two files containing different editions in one media. These versions do not have the 64bit bootloader necessary for UEFI. But those files are larger than 4gb so it would not work anyway in UEFI mode. By working around with the files I somehow lost it.

So there are windows installation media around that cannot be installed in UEFI mode, but it is my own fault not to rely on official media...
