    Thanks.
Wonder if there is a group policy setting? Haven't dug for it yet.

I did notice that the default url handler is IE even when ff set as default browser.
That one I can get around by assoicatinn the protocol with ff.

Yes, theres at least one group policy setting I found (there may be more). Computer config - Admin templates - all settings - turn on/off windows smartscreen. Double click on it, shows up as placeholder. The setting doesn't stick even if you make changes there.

I suspect that's because they don't want us to get owned by new viruses... if there are any? Should probably go check up on that EICAR file...

    Bill,
Many thanks for looking that up. Sure wish that MS wasn't trying so hard to find out what software we are downloading. I have nothing to hide, however, I do not care for MS looking over my shoulder.

If I get industrious, I'll try to search the registry itself, although I suspect that we have one of those cases here where there is no registry entry until you add the entry.

I did change the default url handler from IE to FF so that FF handles my url requests.

Simply marking FF as the default browser is not enough. One has to change the file associations in the protocol section.

Actually, there are so many shortcomings to this pre-alpha version that I'll be spending less time with win 8 developer preview.

I more suspect that they wnat to find out what software we are downloading. This fact has been mentioned in several of the technical mags/blogs.

The verification that a download is virus-free can be handled in many other ways.

Yeah, I suppose so... but isn't that a breach of privacy? Or is there something I didn't read on the ToS that states we consent to Microsoft knowing what software we download?

Smartscreen has been a part of IE for a while in case folks haven't noticed. The idea is to now make it OS wide. Hopefully in the beta onwards, it should be disable-able though this should not be seen as a recommendation to disable it. You can set it to require admin approval or just give a warning which are the other 2 options. So its kinda like UAC.

And AFAIK, smartscreen doesn't feed info to MS servers so it doesn't really breach any privacy.

Okay, thanks, that was what I was after.
And it would make sense to have it as the 'new UAC', because only the regular users would be the smartscreen because, well, Administrators know what they're doing... or at least they're supposed to.
Thing is, why has Microsoft released a non-functional feature? That doesn't really make much sense (even though it does happen often).
