License confustion in a VM

Thanks for all the info and links.

The microsoft link does seem to imply you can move it between pcs or vms.
I also found an independent link who referenced this source and says the same thing.

Now one last question. At NewEgg it says BOTH oem and personal use may NOT be transferred to another machine.
Are they wrong or just trying to sell us more copies?

    Hi there
Initially there was some confusion as when W8 first appeared there was concern that even with a NON OEM copy it would be restricted to the machine it was installed on - that was soon changed. It was even more restrictive moving Office 2013 around too -- also since changed.

If you have license queries it's always better to get info from THE OWNERS of the material (i.e in this case Ms) rather than 3rd parties even if they are flogging Ms stuff.

BTW the situation is confusing also if you "clone" VM's on identical virtual hardware since a cloned Virtual machine is identical in every way to the Virtual machine it was cloned from and it will never request re-activation - however while cloning IMO is 100% legit (you often want to run different software or test some alternate settings) you aren't under the EULA from what I can see allowed to run more than ONE of these at a time.

I can't see Ms going bonkers on this one - otherwise for testing you'd need zillions of activations -- however in the past Ms was very cagey on anything to do with virtual machines -- now though it's become much more mainstream.

IMO Ms ought to have some sort of "Developers Test License" for HOME users - but that seems as far off as ever with MSDN subscriptions out of reach for most home users and TechNet closing down soon.

    Cheers
