I just found that 8 doesn't come with WMP what the heck is Microsoft thinking !! Music is really one of my passions and now I find I cannot play CD's with 8 - this might be the last straw

There are plenty of alternatives out there. How about VLC? If you're really desperate, MS will sell you Windows Media Center.

I don't know if WMP came with the Pro version of Win 8, that I have, or if it came with the Media Center upgrade (I got the free Media Center upgrade that was offered early on).

WMP comes with Win 8 Pro for sure. Look in Control Panel - Program & Features - Turn Windows Features on or off - Media Features.

Windows Features - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

However it does not play DVD's as that uses a licensed codex that MS has to pay for.

Windows 8 (all editions) do ship with WMP installed (except the N-europe and KN-korean version).
WMP may have been disabled by OEM so it doesn't show up. Follow Phone Man's instruction on how to enable it.

Its probably already there just waiting for activation. Simply type "windows media player" on the Start screen and click the icon that appears. This will start the setup process where MS asks you a bunch of questions that are relevant to how it will be setup:

Doesn't this have to do with the EU's lawsuit which forced MS to realease OS versions with and with out WMP for EU countries? Doesn't Australia fall under that ruling?

    Hello John,

If you are referring to a N edition of Windows 8, then yes unfortunately it doesn't include Windows Media Player (WMP) due to a silly European law.

    N Editions - Microsoft Windows

This version of Windows 8 N includes the same functionality as Windows 8, except that it doesn't include certain media-related technologies (Windows Media Player, Camera, Music, Video). As a result, you'll need software from Microsoft or a third party to play or create audio CDs, media files, and video DVDs, stream music, take and store pictures, and use a webcam.

However, no worries. You are able to download and install the free Media Features Pack below for K and N editions of Windows 8 to get WMP back.

Download Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8 from Official Microsoft Download Center

End-user customers can enable the media functionality to work properly by installing the Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 8 (KB2703761).
    Hope this helps.

Well looks like it is an N version then as it was made in the UK for some totally unfathomable reason I mean I am on the other side of the globe.

I suppose I could try an after market program but I am still pretty damn mad that I have this situation and as for having to buy it I think that stinks. M$ 8 gets a big -10 from me for this pretty ordinary treatment I mean I did pay for this and that is what sticks in my craw, if I had got it by foul means then serves me right but this is again shabby treatment for a long time user and supporter of Microsoft.

Plus if I do get an after market one then I shall have to redo all my music collection which is sitting probably a few transistors away in the version of seven.

It is stuff like this that is making people go back to 7 as I myself might just do if anymore rot goes on and just keep this upgrade as a museum piece or a coaster.

Sorry Shawn I meant to add that I might just try what you said when I get onto that machine tonight.
