Interesting. I have a normal MS TechNet download. When I try to run the Media feature pack, I get a message:
"The update is not applicable to your computer"

I suppose I could try an after market program but I am still pretty damn mad that I have this situation and as for having to buy it I think that stinks. M$ 8 gets a big -10 from me for this pretty ordinary treatment I mean I did pay for this and that is what sticks in my craw, if I had got it by foul means then serves me right but this is again shabby treatment for a long time user and supporter of Microsoft.

Plus if I do get an after market one then I shall have to redo all my music collection which is sitting probably a few transistors away in the version of seven.

It is stuff like this that is making people go back to 7 as I myself might just do if anymore rot goes on and just keep this upgrade as a museum piece or a coaster.

Sorry Shawn I meant to add that I might just try what you said when I get onto that machine tonight.
Yeah, this all has to do with the European law resulting from the antitrust lawsuit for WMP from Europe.

It's not really Microsoft's fault at all. They are just having to comply with this stupid law. Luckily WMP is still allowed by the law to be provided as a separate Media Features Pack download.

Thanks Shawn that makes sense now why they are held at gunpoint is beyond me as if M$ were going to benefit something extra from this draconian rot.

Thanks for the reply, Shawn. I am not over excited about the loss of the media centre, but I was drawn into the thread by Phone Man's clip. This is mine.

    (Sorry for the over write)
I am thinking that perhaps one must have the original Media centre key, or, maybe it is only showing on an update.

    You're welcome Dave.

Just to clarify to help avoid confusion for others though, Windows Media Player (WMP) is different than Window Media Center (WMC).

WMC is a feature that is no longer included in Windows 8, and must be purchased to be added back to Windows 8.

Thanks. I can see that the main discussion is around WMP, but how did phone man get that choice? Does it appear automatically if you have purchased the key?

    Dave,

Yep, that's correct. Windows Media Center (WMC) is also added in "Windows Features" to be able to turn on or off after you have purchased WMC through Add features to Windows 8/Windows 8.1 Preview.
