Re-installation of Windows 8 on manufactured desktop

    Hello there Eight Forums,

I am looking for a bit of help per-say, I have never dabbled in the installation or reinstallation of Windows 8 so far, but I am looking for information on how to re-install windows 8 onto a desktop computer that does not come with restore discs.

Now is it true that the CD-Key is stored on the BIOS? Or was that just a rumor that was floating around, I have never had true clarification on that.

If the answer is no, where would I find the CD-Key at that point?

Basically it is for a desktop computer that is no longer functioning and there were no restore discs created during original operation of the computer.

Thanks this would help a lot to help me know more about Windows 8 installation and reinstallation process's.

Yes, the key is embedded in the BIOS as long as the computer came with Windows 8.

"If" you can find an installation disc for Windows, when you install it will just use the key in the BIOS, you will never get prompted to enter a key, nor will you have to activate manually.

Getting the install disc is the overwhelming challenge for most people. You can get it from
1). Technet with a paid subscription
2). MSDN with a paid subscription
3). Potentially from another vendor who sent the disc with a system
4). Some download from questionable sites on the internet.

There were no discs made, This computer is not mine, but I know myself recovery discs are always a must.

But I am glad to know that the CD-Key is embedded now that takes some weight off my shoulders.

    Thanks, Ill let you know.

If the computer is still working, download ProduKey and run it. It will decode your Product Key from the registry. There are tutorials on this site to show you the Product Key.

Having the product key is of no advantage. Without the media you cannot restore. If you have the media, you won't need the key as it will be found automatically.
