didn't work. the only way i can currently boot into win8 is to open my boot options and manually choose secondary hardrive.

When the BIOS splash screen shows up, tap F12 (looks like you have a Dell PC) and change the boot order to the second HDD. Then it should boot Win8.

If you had Marked the System8 partition Inactive, Windows 8 will not boot from F12 one time boot menu.

Have you tried EasyBcd. Looks like it would work with your setup?

Use several different computers during a day, so specs are irrelevant.
What you want is a double boot. But then you have to install it as such. The way it is now will only work via the BIOS boot sequence unless you fix the bootmgr in your recovery partition and make the win8 partition inactive.

Btw: the way it is now is my preferred setup. A lot less headaches than a double boot.

I have never used EasyBCD before in my life. All things default is the way to go, no fancy stuff.
