cmd.exe Administrator X: commands

I am trying to restore my Asus a55a laptop to factory setting from the cmd.exe Adminstrator shell. What commands might one use to select the recovery partition files and do a 'reset' from these files? I have little trouble finding tutorials in Linux but am not sure how to find such tutorials for Windows. Any help would be appreciated.

The restore to factory settings is not a Windows function and cannot be accessed from the command line. This can only be done at system startup. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

I did not have a blank disc at the time, so I was unable to make a recovery disk. All I have is the recovery partition and a developer's version of 8.1. That being said I actually have the Windows 8 recovery partition (from the factory) and I have the Windows 8.1 developer preview recovery partition that will restore 8.1. The factory F9 now longer works because the machine is now dual booting Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8.1 developer. The factory recovery partition is intact and what I have tried is:

1)Installing and running Asus recovery-I think it is looking for F9 recovery stuff that is not longer there-instead of going to restore from the recovery partition (from the factory-intact)

2)I tried making a recovery usb from within Windows 8.1 but it is using 8.1 files instead of the files from the recovery partition (factory files)

Observation: Who could have possibly imagined that having the customer make recovery disks was a good idea? (while I concede that this is a good money making move-it really bends the customer over the proverbial stump)

And btw, you no longer get a product key for Windows 8 it is embedded in the recovery partition files-not human viewable from what I have been told by Microsoft and Asus

Please post a screen shot (full screen) of Disk Management.

Switch to the Desktop. Press Windows key+r, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter or click GO. Make it full screen.

How to Use the Snipping Tool in Vista - Vista Forums (says it's for Vista but also works with Win 7/8).

Once you have the image saved, start a new reply, click on Go Advanced.
Click on the Paperclip Icon next to the Smiley Icon.
In the Manage Attachments window, click Browse and navigate to where you saved the image and select it.
Click the Upload button.
Close the Manage Attachments window.
Click on the Paperclip Icon again and select the image you uploaded. It will be placed in your post.

If there is a Recovery Partition, you can try making it the Active partition from Disk Management then reboot. It should boot to the Recovery partition and start the restore to factory.

F: is the real recovery partition and it's already set as Active. It shows as a Removable disk though, is that right?

Actually those are the files I backed up on a usb. I did try installing from usb but it barked that it was a unusable device or something to that effect. I looked around to see if I could make an iso from the recovery partition files (factory) but didn't find anything. Did try Winusb in Ubuntu but only had the Windows 8.1 developer iso

It goes through the paces and goes to reboot. It appears that when I installed 8.1 that my recovery partition got wiped-at least it shows 100% unused. I will go back in on the Linux side and add the factory partition files and try the rest again. I will also see if the factory files will fit within the 8.1 recovery partition as well

Post a screenie of what is on the usb stick. See if there are files called boot.wim and install.wim - they will likely be in a folder called sources.

Recovery screenies

boot-sources.pngboot-all.png I did not see boot.wim and install.wim. I will look to see if I can find them on the Windows 8.1 install

found boot.wim and install.wim on the Windows 8.1 install DVD and they are huge files. Is this what needs to be in the sources folder to boot the factory recovery install files?

The recovery image will be an install.wim of some kind - might be split into several smaller files, usually with the .swm extension.

If you have the install dvd, why don't you use that?

Installation usually goes like this:

Boot.wim is loaded into ram. The setup program runs from ram and extracts the image from install.wim onto your selected partition.

Oem recovery setup programs will sometimes also repartition the drive exactly as per factory.

The install DVD is for Windows 8.1 developer and asks for a product key. Asus recovery partition files have an embedded product key code that Microsoft says they can provide for me, but Asus insists that it is something that Microsoft provides. Mom and dad don't agree on this one  I am looking into trying to inject the recovery partition files (factory Asus) into a new install DVD using Microsoft Deployment Toolkit but have never used the toolkit before, it should be Microsoft easy, right?:sarc: Unless there is an easier method

So, basically just add the boot.wim and the install.wim into the 'sources' folder of the Asus factory recovery partition files and see what happens?

No. What is the sources folder now?

If it looks like everything is there, you should be able to add a boot menu entry for the recovery partition and select it.

You would need to give the recov partition a drive letter and add it to the menu
