How to Install Win7 Along Side Factory Installed Win8?

In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Win8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Win8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Win8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)

Is there guidance on this anywhere? Some of the threads I've found seem to be particular to specific manufacturers. And some get into some very low level stuff. I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.

I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Win8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

I'll be looking into VMware because I know it's a very flexible solution. But in this situation I value simplicity over flexibility.

    Thanks, Bob

Hi brummyfan. Thanks for responding. I had found that tutorial but it specifically says that it applies when Win7 (or Vista) is installed first. I know that the principle would, or should, be the same. But are the gotchas the same?

I'll look at it of course. But I'd like to find a procedure for exactly my situation (Win8 factory installed, then adding Win7).

    Thanks again, Bob

Installing Win7 over Win8 will replace boot loader. You can use EasyBCD 2.2 to recreate Windows 8 boot entry or fix anything else, and once in Windows 8 you can use BCDEDIT to reinstall Win8 boot loader. It's long way but works !

Not sure how it works with UEFI !
