Can't create a recovery usb stick, option greyed out

    Hello,

I wanted to remove the hidden recovery parition on my Asus Zenbook UX31A, which is 20GB in size, and I need that space, because the laptop just has a 128GB SSD, and I am permanently on space limit of about 1-2GB and Windows isn't working anymore properly.

The problem is, when I open the Windows 8 recovery tool, the option for copying the recovery partition is greyed out. I googled for this, and I just could find informations about, that this can happen, but not why, and how to solve it.

Deleting the Recovery Partition is NOT RECOMMENDED

You can only make one copy, than it is greyed out.

What do you mean by that... I never made a copy before, otherwise I wouldn't ask. And what does the tutorial help, I looked into it before btw. Am I missing something? I don't want to make a simple boot usb stick, I want to have the entire recovery parition copied to it, and then remove it from my HDD.

A Zenbook does not have a DVD drive. Also, there is no Recovery tool by Asus for Windows 8.

On some ASUS you will need to download the Recovery tool from ASUS web site.

I ran into the same problem on my ASUS K75DE, there was no utility to burn a recovery disk set installed on the laptop. Also the ASUS utility for doing this does not work in Windows 8. The best you can do is "Create a recovery drive" using the Recovery applet in Control Panel.

EDIT: Forgot to mention it wasn't grayed out on mine. It was of no use to me though as it wouldn't restore when I swapped out my hard drive for an SSD.
