    Surface Pro Factory Reset Issues

So I recently installed linux on my Surface Pro, but decided to go back to Windows 8 since wifi doesn't work properly yet. I thought, restoring shouldn't be a big deal, just insert the recovery USB you made and factory reset it. Boy, was I wrong. Any time I try a factory reset, it fails around 97%-99%. Windows won't even start booting. I kept trying it until I decided to try installing Ubuntu on it then trying to reset it again, hoping that would fix something. Well, it helped a little. The reset still fails at the same point, but now instead of not booting, it says "Recovery: Your PC needs to be repaired." At first it was because an EFI file was missing, so I booted into the recovery drive again and tried an auto-recovery. It fixed the EFI issue, but it's still at the same screen with \Windows\System32\config\system missing. Can anyone help me get my Surface Pro working again? Thanks in advance.

Welp, I tried to reset it a few more times, but now the "Recovery: Your PC needs to be repaired" screen doesn't even show up. It just goes straight to the UEFI firmware menu. I'm thinking about replacing it under warranty, because I have a yellow spot on my screen in the bottom right corner anyways from the adhesive not being applied right.

Sounds a good idea to use your warranty.

Did you disable EUFI in the BIOS to install Linux? If yes you may have to enable it again for recovery to work.

    Hi there
Wipe Linux off it before it goes back otherwise some "Clever Dick" in the service dept will try and say you've "Voided the Warranty".

Incidentally -- slightly OT but relevant for any Internet or Physical store purchase. If you pay with a CREDIT CARD (note not a Debit or instant money type card or AMEX which is a "Charge card" - legally works as a Credit card but isn't actually a Credit card) then whether there is a warranty or not you have the right to a refund if the goods are not of "merchantable quality - I.e they must be what you paid for and perform the function stated in the specs -- if you can't get a refund from the VENDOR (doesn't have to be the manufacturer) then the CARD ISSUER has to refund your money or get you a new product AT THEIR expense.

This is how it works in the UK -- other European countries it's similar as it's an EU directive. I'm amazed how many "Locals" don't know even the basis of Consumer law in their own countries - It doesn't cost anything to do a tiny bit of research to know and understand your basic rights - especially in these days where "rip offs" seem to be the norm.

Can I claim on my credit card when something goes wrong? - Which? Consumer Rights

I got a Brand new SAMSUNG S4 phone FREE this way -- I paid for an unlocked phone -- when I received it they sent me a Locked phone and said logon to the Internet and you'll get the code to unlock it (at an extra cost of 20 EUR !!). I refused - I received a different product from what I'd ordered-- they said well that's it -- we aren't refunding your money -- so I had a go with "Sharkley Card" (Barclays!!) and got a brand new phone FREE - they didn't want the old one back so I paid 20 EUR to unlock it and sold it -- so a nice S4 Galaxy for 20 EUR.

(This type of law applies in the EU and EEA -includes Norway, Iceland, Switzerland etc. Probably in the US you'll have similar state laws governing this type of stuff --not sure about 'OZ or Asia though).

    Cheers

Yeah I booted into the Ubuntu live cd and used gparted to remove all the partitions, then I ran another factory reset knowing it would fail, but still create the windows partitions, so there's no trace of linux. And as for the credit card refund thing, I'm not sure if that works here in the US as well, but I doubt Microsoft will refuse to replace my surface.
