Windows probably has it fixed where this can't happen, but I bought a new machine with Windows 8. Is it possible to wipe the hard drive and install Windows 7 or XP on my new machine ?

Sorry if I posted in the wrong area,

Yes to Windows 7, no to XP. Some systems come with "Downgrade Rights". Don't know if yours does or not, check with teh place you bought it from.

Why do you want to do this? If you don't like the Windows 8 Metro interface you can install Classic Shell (free) or a program like Start8 from Stardock that will allow you to boot directly to the Desktop and have a normal Start button as you did in Windows 7. My recommendation is to take this route and stay with Windows 8. Take some time to play with it and you may learn to like it. I haven't but you may.

8 pro could be downgraded to 7. Why are you thinking of downgrading? Performance wise you want to be on 8.

You should be able to install whatever you want on your laptop.. No OS can deny you a preference of other OSs on your hardware.

Microsoft did not sell you the laptop, therefore Microsoft cannot deny your choice of OS.

However finding current drivers for an old OS may be problematic, but not impossible..

Im a 2000 & Win7 diehard, but I actually enjoy Win 8 very much.

It is soooo fast even after so many apps and programs installed and customizations.

As ZTRUKER pointed out, you can get apps/programs that emulate the Windows 7 platform with the benefits of Windows 8

Or do as I did,. I dual boot my system thinking Id give up 8 and go back to my Win 7, but that hasnt been the case at all, ive completely abandoned my beloved Win 7.

I only use it to test issues others have with win 7, and try to resolve them.,

And as a backup in case I have issues with my Win 8, which has not arisen since my install back in March 2013.

You bought a computer with a software license. MS had rules on what you can and cannot due with that licence. I don't even think you can buy an XP license.

Feel free to get any Linux distro you want. These do provide freedom.

Thanks for all of the replies. Do not have a problem with a company making money. JMO, a company as awesome and rich as Microsoft should put out Machine's with XP, Windows 7, and 8. Give the people a chose to purchase the OS they want. I'm disabled and couldn't come up with the money to get Windows 7 in time.

The software license is for that software, on that hardware, hes not looking to install that software on different hardware.

There is no hardware license issue here.

Understood, but it doesn't give you free reign to just change to a different version. You could buy a license for a different version...maybe..but some licenses are not sold anymore.

Hi there
Sorry but you are WRONG about XP --It's not easy but provided you a) Have a copy of XP and b) can find SATA drivers and SLIPSTREAM them into the XP install disk you can of course install XP on a new machine - although XP has a limitation of 4GB RAM so I don't see what the point would be in doing it. The Video drivers would probably not work with full functionality so you'd probably have basic video modes only. You'd also only be working in 32 bit mode even though I think ALL PC's now are 64 bit machines.

I agree that it's far better if you want to "downgrade" then install W7 but please be careful in saying something CAN'T be done -- difficult / in advisable is one thing but impossible is another.

(The OP was talking about INSTALLING W7 or XP on a new machine -- not "Downgrading" which again is another issue).

Cheers
jimbo

XP is a 12 year old OS and for good or bad, it is what it is. Whether or not a new computer is compatible with XP is entirely up to the manufacturer, not Microsoft. To run on a specific computer the OS must have drivers that were specifically written for the hardware. While Microsoft is quite good at including drivers for current hardware it is not very good with hardware that does not yet exist. Writing a device drivers requires detailed hardware knowledge and is not a simple thing. Most manufacturers find it very difficult to justify the considerable time and effort (and cost) of writing device drivers for what is essentially an obsolete OS. In the current highly competitive market who can blame them?

Welcome to EightForums

1) Downgrade to Windows 7.
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/13326-downgrade-windows-8-windows-7-a.html
Warning you must have the uEFI/BIOS firmware setting in Step Three set.

2) If Using a USB Pendrive on a PC with a uEFI BIOS.
USB Pendrive need to be formated to FAT32 as in
http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/15458-uefi-bootable-usb-flash-drive-create-windows.html
Take note of Step 11 for Windows 7.
Also you will need to use a USB 2.0 port, as there are no USB 3.0 drivers in Windows 7.
