    Windows 8.1 Installation

    Hi,

I have a quick question when Windows 8.1 is available. Will you be able to install this over your Windows 7 installation? Or will Windows 8 be needed to be of installed first?

    Thank You
    Andy

I believe that you will have to have Windows 8 installed.

In my opinion Windows 8.1 will act like a servicepack. So, from the release on they will only sell Windows 8.1 to new customers.

That means that if you have a copy of Windows 8 and you do a fresh installation you will have to download the 8.1 servicepack. But that goes automatic ofcourse via the Windows Update.

And if you have a copy of, say Windows 7, and you are buying an upgrade you will get Windows 8.1 directly.

Well, you see, no one has been exactly crystal clear on that yet.
I hear on one side of the net that Windows 8.1 is going to be a free download others say no, if it is to be a free download than I assume one must already own a license for 8 to get 8.1 for free.
I got my copy of 8 while you could get it for $40, I feel for those of you that have to pay $119 for the upgrade just to get 8.1 for free , if indeed Microsoft is going to go that route.

IMO, I am thinking 8.1 is going to be much like a service pack for owners of 8 because Microsoft feels they passed off a stinking pile of horse dung as an OS on us, for those of you upgrading from 7 to 8.1 I would say right now it is anyones guess how it is going to go, I would say with all certainty that if you are going from 7 right to 8.1, it IS going to cost you, meaning it is not going to be a free download.

I have been reading that Microsoft is looking to generate higher sales from 8.1 than 8, so I say is 8 going to be ditched and 8.1 become the "new" OS?

There is just so much speculation out there right now and people are more interested in ogleing the new features than to getting the facts straight right now, I do not think anyone but Microsoft REALLY knows what is what yet.

Personally I am not even going to mess with 8.1 until it hits the shelves which is going to be around Christmas this year.

My question is, how to download 8.1 and install in a VM seprately. I want to test it before I just blindly install it, whether over top or clean install.

I will tell you this, even though I am not all that impressed with what I have seen, 8.1 is definitely a step up from 8 but personally, I just do not like the UI and I do not think I ever will, I just don't want my desktop, laptop or tablet looking and feeling like a phone.

Has Microsoft listened to the users? Well if taking the Windows icon from the charm bar and slapping it on the taskbar and calling it a start button that only takes you back and forth from the desktop to the metro ui is listening .......... you be the judge.

MSFT will release 8.1 as an upgrade via the Windows Store/ Windows Update only. So the only way to test it in a VM first is to install Windows 8 in a VM environment and update that version via the Windows Store/ Windows Update.

Good luck with it. I trust Microsoft very much (I'm a fanboy ) so I will install the public beta as soon as it will be released!

I have made a backup of whole windows system from an SSD to a hard drive, together with all programs installed and update it occasionally, so as soon a good beta comes out I'm installing it. If anything goes bad I'll just replace it from backup and in a few minutes it will be back to original state, don't risk much that way.

That's also a proven methode. The big problem with this, IMHO, is that whenever you install a new program, or change an important setting, you must make another backup (or you will lose it when you apply the backup). And since you will only know after a while or so if the change was wise or not this would mean that you'd have to keep a few old backups as well. In other words....it eats storagecapacity and is very laborintensive .

A VM environment for testing is much safer in my opinion.
