Downgrade to Windows 7 problem

    Win 8.1 pro / win 8.1

Microsoft does not want people to be able to downgrade from 8 to 7, that's why they made it so difficult. If it was easy many would have done it, and I'm not talking about duel booting or virtual. I'd love to have a surface pro with windows 7.

In BIOS setup>Boot tab there will be two settings changes available for Secure Boot. I had to disable the second one before it would change the first one.

You can then either install, or test if Win7 is to your liking in a Dual Boot by shrinking C to create a Logical partition for install.

When I had done this due to other dissatisfaction with the laptop I removed the Dual Boot and returned it. If you run into Problems you can also run Asus Factory Recovery via F8 Repair console.
Hi Gregrocker. I have just found this forum and it may be the answer to my problem. Every where I have searched says its impossible to install win7 on a partition of a win8 machine. I see that you have done it. Could you point me some links on how to please. I have a Lenovo g580 with windows 8 and I would love to be able to dual boot windows 7. If its not possible to dual boot as every one seems to think would vm be the way to go or a bootable usb maybe??

    TIA

It is not Microsoft, but some OEM's are locking you out of the UEFI/BIOS firmware setting need for Windows 7.

I personally have done over 2000.

You can absolutely install Win7 on a Win8 machine. You only need to to disable Secure Boot in the BIOS, then install WIn7 in UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) - Install Windows 7 with - Windows 7 Forums or Bypass UEFI to Install WIn7 if you understand the difference between UEFI and BIOS and don't want to mess with UEFI: Technical Note: UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS - YouTube

This is your property so no one can lock you out of using it as you wish.
In the past when OEM's tried to lock the BIOS they lost very quickly in court and really didn't even try to defend the legality of locking someone out of using their property the legal way they want to.

Thanks a lot guys. I will give it a shot. Then. Just to confirm.

    1. Make a partition
    2. Disable secure boot in the Bios
    3. Install win7 to the partition.

Disable Secure Boot first. Let us know if you need any help.

Make sure if you already have four Primary partitions that creating the new partition doesn't tip it to Dynamic disk, which is only meant to span a single partition across multiple HD's. To avoid this format the fourth partition as Logical using Partition Wizard Create Partition Video Help or create it in the Command Prompt using Partition / Extended : Logical Drives - Windows 7 Forums

This is my hard drive at the moment.
The win7 partition was made without disabling security.
Am I now OK to proceed to disable security and install
BTW I made the partition using Computer Management suite.

One easy way to link to your Win8 files from the smaller Win7 OS is to rightclick your Win8 User folders to add to the related Windows 7 Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums

In the library window you can even tell Win7 to make that folder the default Save location for that library (Documents, Pictures, etc.)

Sounds cool. I will give it a try. Problem now is that the install seems to be hanging after the first reboot. Does all the setup and copying files etc. Reboots then sort of hangs in as much as the windows 7 logo is pulsating with that deathly greenish tint and says starting Windows underneath the logo and it just stays like that for about 30 mins????
